Hoggard doubtful for second Test

England seamer Matthew Hoggard could miss the second Test against India through the back injury that ruled him out of the opening game of the series at Lord’s. His problem with a disc in the back will be reassessed on Monday and be constantly monitored by the ECB medical staff over the next few days.

Following Hoggard’s withdrawal, England chose the uncapped Chris Tremlett, a late call-up to the squad after Steve Harmison also was ruled out, ahead of Stuart Broad. Between them, the three England seamers currently playing at Lord’s have a meagre twenty Test appearances between them, effectively elevating spinner Monty Panesar to the role of senior bowler.
