Greg Chappell – New Indian Coach

Australian Greg Chappell has been appointed to replace John Wright as India’s coach by a selection panel consisting of Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri and Srinivas Venkataraghavan.

Greg Chappell edged out fellow Australian Tom Moody, India’s Mohinder Amarnath and the West Indian Desmond Haynes for the role.

What went in Chappell’s favour was his willingness to dedicate 290 days a year to coaching India alongside his extensive experience at international level where he played 87 tests for Australia between 1970 and 1984.

His contract is for two years until the 2007 World Cup.
