Who will play their last ODI during the WC?

theegyptian

International Vice-Captain
Sangakkara and Jayawardene retiring.

Clarke will do well to play past the WC

Likes of Bopara should be dropped permanently.

Wonder if someone like Steyn/Broad/Anderson/Johnson will give ODIs a miss after the WC and concentrate on tests and IPL.

I'll answer for Anderson. No. He will be looking for 300 ODI wickets and won't like to lose the money he gets from playing ODIs. If he wasn't playing ODIs Lancs would expect him to play for them so he wouldn't be saving himself for Tests only and would probably be bowling more overs than if he was playing for England.

There's probably a case for Anderson to not retire, not play away ODI series and see if he can make 2019.

He's barely played away odi cricket since the last WC so I guess you and FBU might be right. 2019 could be a stretch.

Seems amazing to me that Steyn hasn't even played 100 odis yet.

Morgan is a strange one for England. Has played some of England's best ever middle order odi knocks but is more and more inconsistent and seems to be a terrible starter. He averaged 40+ with a strike rate of 90 only a year or so ago but is steadily deterioratating.

Ideally England would love him to stay around. As an ODI/T20 specialist he has time to play every series and he wouldn't need to be rested. Plus he has been one of England's best ever middle order bats. Quality averages against tough bowling teams in Aus, SA and Pakistan. He's never struck me as a particularly good captain but he could easily be a good bridge between this generation and the next. Can't just clean out all the age 28 and over players and leave Buttler and Root.

But they may have to take the decision that he has been worked out by opposition and isn't getting any better and decide to get rid off him if he fails at this world cup.

They probably should and will keep with him for a while after the WC given they've lost plenty of talent over the last year or two meaning that they can't really afford to get rid of him as well.

Misbah, Sanga, Clarke, MSD, Afridi, Herath, Younis Khan, Mahela and some of the more senior associate players could all feasibly retire after this WC.

Anderson and Broad will probably be looking towards the 2019 World Cup in England and to be fair, their is not obvious replacements for either. I reckon even if England win this World Cup they will be rested for a lot of ODI series in the next 12 months as the focus will go back to tests. England have the Ashes, and away tours to Pakistan and South Africa, no disrespect to ODI cricket, but most English people would rather win the test series against those three.

Apparently Afridi is retiring from ODIs after this WC
Yeah a lot of people are sure like before he comes out of retirement, but I don't think he will no matter how good he does at the World Cup. He probably wants to focus on the t20 money leagues now so ODI series have the potential to clash with those.

For NZ I'd say Vettori is highly likely. Mills and Elliott possible as well.

I really hope I'm wrong but I would put money on Gayle retiring from ODI's. He has not scored runs in this format for about 18 months now and he doesn't look as if he enjoys playing them anymore.

If he doesn't score runs in this tournament I think he will retire from ODI's.

I reckon Ronchi will play for 2 or 3 more years
Yeah, I think so too - starved of international opportunities for most of his career, I doubt he'll be too quick to give it away now he's cemented himself a spot.

I don't think he will be around in 2019. Probably retire when he turns 35 in 2017. That's 38 Tests left and about 60 ODIs which he won't play in all.
Can't see England dropping players and starting to build for the next WC. We didn't build for this one. Probably be about 4/5 players that will go on and play in 2019

We do plan and build for World Cups, what tends to happen is that we panic and throw all the planning out of the window 3 months before the tournament.

Last 2 tournaments it's been the wicketkeeper and opener that's been patched, this time it's Cook.

I'd be very surprised if Haddin and Clarke play ODI's after this tournament.

Time to move on from Doherty as well IMO.

England: Will be surprised Anderson plays on at the ODI level - he rarely plays ODI's outside of England in recent times anyway and he won't be there in 2019. Not sure who else.

India: Dhoni an outside chance of quitting international cricket, but I suspect he plays on for a little while.

New Zealand: This will be the last we see of Vettori and Mills, NcCullum might go as well.

Pakistan: Afridi, Misbah and hopefully Younis.

South Africa: Can't think of anyone right now. Might be a case for Steyn to become a Test specialist, but that seems unlikely.

Sri Lanka: Jayawardene and Sangakkara have basically confirmed this will be the last time they play ODI's, Malinga, Dilshan and Herath seem likely to walk as well.

West Indies: The way he's playing Gayle will probably leave ODI's.

Bangladesh: Mortaza? Not young and struggles to stay fit. Can't really think of anyone else.

Zimbabwe: Some rumours that Taylor will play full-time in England after the WC, but unlikely to lose anyone due to age I think.

Associates: Some of the older ones. Khurram Khan seems the most famous and likely one.
