ODI World XI

Furball

So let's imagine that we can transport Australia's side from 2007 to the present day and we need to select a World XI to take them on. Who makes the cut?

I've got a squad in mind for this hypothetical matchup, it's just team composition I need to decide on.

1. H Amla
2.
3. V Kohli
4. AB de Villiers
5.
6. MS Dhoni
7.
8.
9.
10.
11. JM Anderson

Squad:

R Sharma
K Williamson
DRPL Taylor
KC Sangakkara
MA Starc
MG Johnson
DW Steyn
TM Dilshan
AD Mathews
HMRKB Herath
Shakib al Hasan

Surely there are better options than Anderson. Kiwi quicks come to mind.

Tempted to go Starc to take the other new ball, Herath as the spinner and Steyn bowling 1st change/specialist death bowler.

Mathews also a handy bowler so he's tempting. The new rules certainly have gone a long way in killing of the Chris Gayle bowling role in ODI cricket.

When was the last time Watson opened in pyjamas?

Yeah swap Johnson for Starc and I was considering this exact line up.

Warner's not that good an ODI bat and there's plenty of middle order ODI bats who've been better for lomger than Smith.
Fair enough. On current form I'd be considering both but if you are looking for a bit more of a track record then yeah, I agree there are better options.

Anderson is the best new ball bowler around by an absolutely enormous margain.
Well if you are picking him on recent/current form then surely you would pick Williamson over Kohli, averaging 75 over the last 12 months.

In fact, how's Williamson's bowling since he was called for throwing?
Williamson's bowling is a little worse which means he is nowhere near as useful as Dilshan or Mathews with the ball.

I think Pothas has the XI, the only questionable pick would be Anderson. Probably deserving to be their on current form but has hardly lit the world on fire away from home all that often in ODIs. The stats don't really reflect it but I'd seriously consider a fit Malinga for that last spot. Best death bowler in the world and probably the most threatening short spell bowler there is.

Actually on recent form Dhoni has been pretty average. Get Ronchi in there or give Sanga the gloves.

It all really comes down to how you define "recent form". Anderson averaged 29 in 2014 and its only in the recent tri series that he improved his stats a bit (averaging 25 since start of 2014). I think its important to define a timeframe from which players can be picked, otherwise its just purely subjective in terms of what one considers to be recent good performances.

The point was not his overall average but what he has been doing in the first 10 overs with the new ball (22 wickets at 16.4, econ 3.22....since Jan 2013)

Unfortunately Jimmys later overs in the innings are letting his overall figures down, but Furball is picking him on what he will do for the side straight up.

Yeah that's kind of what I saying, there needs to be a specific timeframe for this excises from which we can pick players from, otherwise I don't really see the point as people will just purely off memory/reputation, not counting who's actually performed and who hasn't.

Someone made a similar thread on another forum a few weeks ago and I posted this:

Amla
-
Sangakkara
Kohli
de Villiers
Mathews
Dhoni
Starc
Johnson
Steyn

I went with those three quicks ahead of Anderson because, although he had awesome figures over the last couple of years, almost all of his games in that period had been at home and the thread stipulated that that the team was going to play in Aus/NZ ('team of the World Cup' type thing). Anderson has had a really good series again since then though -- in Australia -- so I'd be really tempted to include him over one of those quicks.

I still don't really know who I'm going to open with; Dilshan I guess unless I stick Williamson there. Williamson would also be a more serious contender to bat #3 ahead of Sanga now than he was then.

Narine and Ajmal being banned makes the spinner spot difficult. Results point you towards Tahir but even though I think his success in ODI cricket can be easily explained, I still don't feel very comfortable with him. Dilshan provides insurance if he gets smashed I guess.
