England thread

GIMH

Norwood's on Fire
Gonna cite this as the first thread but not in the title because it was really embarrassing what happened to Jono in the ashes subbie

Anyway, a thread for the obvious eventual winners

Thirty man squad here:

http://www.ecb.co.uk/news/articles/england-name-30-man-world-cup-squad

I really have no idea what fifteen I would take. Just woke up and I see both Taylor and Morgan have scored runs which really will enhance the anti-Cook calls as Grecian predicted.

Alastair Cook (Essex) (Capt)
Moeen Ali (Worcestershire)
James Anderson (Lancashire)
Ian Bell (Warwickshire)
Ravi Bopara (Essex)
Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire)
Jos Buttler (Lancashire)
Steven Finn (Middlesex)
Alex Hales (Nottinghamshire)
Chris Jordan (Sussex)
Craig Kieswetter (Somerset)
Eoin Morgan (Middlesex)
Joe Root (Yorkshire)
Ben Stokes (Durham)
James Taylor (Nottinghamshire)
Chris Woakes (Warwickshire)

That's 16, reckon it'd be one of Hales or Taylor for my personal squad - or possibly sacrifice Woakes, though I think a party of 15 should have 5 specialist bowlers (even though Stokes/Bopara can provide decent cover). I'd sacrifice the 'specialist' spinners too, I don't see NZ having too many overly spin friendly pitches, and we don't really have a world class option anyway, so might as well cope with the acceptable part time Root/Ali balls and focus on pace

Rather doubt you will be seeing one in Australia or NZ.

I suppose we should still be pleased that Jade has not made the 30 but no Billings makes me sad. I don't know what exactly the situation is with Trott but if he is available than him not going so obviously madness.

Someone should have talked Tresco into going - with him at the top of the order we might have been a threat - as it is we'll probably emulate Roy Hodgson's lot

Would you take the risk of Tresco even if he said he would play, given how he's struggled on previous tours? Likewise I think the same about Trott - Its possibly the worst situation to throw someone back in the team, far too much pressure IMO. With Tresco for sure you couldn't ease him back in over a series or two before...

I'd like to see Hales go because he can get the runs at a good pace at the top, and whilst he hasn't quite done it in OD, he's shown international temperament in the 20/20 game. My main worry is we'll happily rely on the likes of Bell to churn the scoreboard at 4 an over, whilst every other team is capable of scoring at 5's with ease.

I guess with Trott they figured it was too late now to take the risk. But I agree with you.

It's Sunday morning and I have a hangover for the first time since Tresco was in his pomp - a man can dream :)

Well Taylor has done well today so surely he will get dropped to bring back Cook and then when the World Cup is on he will sit on the sidelines until we are out. England that.

Still can't quite believe they're playing these series in the sub-continent. Completely pointless other than to rake some money in and give completely the wrong idea about who'll best suited in the World Cup.

Cook back in for Hales I suspect.

One things for certai, Ben Stokes is a complete waste of a space, be better off batting Ian Bell at 8 and getting him to bowl a couple of overs.

I hope so but knowing our lot Taylor will get dropped for something. Stokes might be useful in Australia but no point using him at all in SL. Wouldn't have Stokes in my squad with broad and Anderson to come back in.

Can't see Kieswetter making it unless he's genuinely considered one of our best 6 or 7 ODI batsmen.

A reserve keeper in a squad of 15 when Morgan (& Hales, in extremis, if selected) can fill in if Jos (heaven forfend, etc) gets broken is a bit of a luxury, IMHO.

I feel Stokes has probably played himself out the squad, unless we do really want someone to bat at 8 and bowl 2 overs for 20 runs because he does that very nicely.

My side for the World Cup.

Cook is going to play, so pointless leaving him out:

Cook
Beartd
Taylor
Root
Morgan
Bopara
Buttler
Jordan
Plunkett
Broad
Anderson

Tredwell is the dilemma, best one-day bowler arguably, but adds little else, and pitches won't suit. He'd be in the squad, along with Hales, Rankin, Finn, Ballance and umm some scrub all-rounder, Woakes, Stokes, Patel even Luke wright, it's all so awful. Would much prefer someone like Vince, or Roy, as specialists, even Cobb, but they're not in the squad. Also wouldn't have minded Willey.

1. Moeen
2. Cook
3. Bell
4. Root
5. Taylor
6. Morgan
7. Buttler
8. Tredwell
9. Broad
10. Finn
11. Anderson

or maybe Bopara in for Bell or Taylor. How does that sound? Lots of accumulators but Moeen, Morgan and Buttler can all find the fence.

Yeah, I think we're a lot more settled than people think. Only possible changes would be a seamer for Tredwell or getting Bopara or Hales in there.

Yeah I reckon playing Tredwell when you've got Ali and Root is just a waste of a position in NZ. Different on the subcontinent where spin would make more of a difference. Sub him out for Bopara/Stokes/Woakes and you've got a deep batting line up, 3 strong pace bowlers, one all rounder and a couple of spinners who can keep it tight and take the odd wicket.

My issue is the invetitable Cook making 20 off 35, then Bell not picking up the pace - unless Ali comes flying out of the blocks were not going to set challenging targets. It's not like we have a fantastic record of our bowling stifling the opposition either...
