Six of the Best Games - Aus vs SL Rivalry

Fierce rivalry between Aus and Sri Lanka was ignited in the 95/96 B&H series in Australia. Over the past 10 years since then, there have been some cracker contests between these 2 nations - I have picked my 6 best ODI's in this video clip.

1. 1995/96 B&H Series, Melb - this game revitilised the SL campaign in Australia, and was the start of an amazing 12 months for SL cricket.
2. 1996 WC Final - That famous day in Lahore - Need I say anymore.
3. 1996 Singer Cup Final - SL stretched their win record to 3 out of 3 games against Australia. This final was a massacre as SL romped home easily as Aravinda goes crazy in last few overs.
4. 2002 ICC Semis - Another big game, another big win for SL as the boys easily win by 7 wkts, with 10 overs to spare.
5. 2004-2nd ODI in Dambulla. The classic Dr Death over by Vaas secures a remarkable "come from behind win" after Symonds is recalled in an amazing act of sportsmanship.
6. 2006 VB Series in Sydney - Sanath gets off a plane after his shoulder injury, and fires another rapid century to pulverise a hapless Aussies team. Superb fielding secures another big win. Sadly, the crowd leaves early as its very one-sided.

Wouldn't happen to have the last two games of the finals in there?

TBH, how many decent contests have there been that Aus won?

I struggle to think of any.

I saw a video just yesterday of this game, in which Australia chased down 260 against SL with Gilchrist scoring a very nice century. I'd try to find it, but youtube isn't working for me atm.

One that stands out to me was when Murali went 1-99 against Australia. He then got 1-55 in the next game - Australia really hammered him. He was made to look quite ordinary in those two games. I was disappointed Murali didn't play against Australia the other day because he's always tested the best against them and you get to see a great battle.

This video was put together for a Sri Lankan forum....hence the games were chosen from a Lankan viewpoint....as some of these games are rarely seen classics with some great cricket from both nations, I believed that there would be some interest on this forum.

From an Aussie viewpoint, I wonder which games will figure in an Aus-SL Best Games pick?

In a tight situation, or a big occasion like a final, SL have generally prevailed over Aus.

Why? In each of these 6 games in the video clip, Aus has gone into the game as top dog - and in some cases (eg: WC '96, Aus collapse from 152/2 in 30 overs to 241 in 50) the pressure has got to them. Even in tight run chases (eg: Aus-SL '04, Bevan and Symonds are unable to get Aus over the line despite needing only 6 off the last over - the famous "Dr Death over" by Vaas) there is a prevailing sense among the Lankans that the Aussies do choke.

Interesting to see how the Aussies fare in the big final on Sat night.

na man Sri Lanka IMO don't have anything on Australia. The only side that probably could have claimed to have that was South Africa & they were easily put away.

I was at this game. Although Murali did go for 99 that day, his bowling was OK....its just that everything that Ponting and Symonds hit came off...and quite a few mi****s landed in no mans land.

SL were leading the finals 1-0. At one stage, SL had Aus 10-3....then around 15/3, Ponting was caught by Mahela at gully. But a referral to the third ump gave the usual inconclusive response, and that was that...... Symonds and Ponting then slowly got Aus back into the game with some good attacking cricket.
