Hopes named as cover for Watson

Interesting question, who would the next all-rounder be after Hopes? We dont seem to have many high quality ones coming through atm.
Probably Butterworth or McDonald. I'd actually say there's more handy all-rounders in domestic cricket at the moment than there has been in a long time, when you consider Hopes and those two behind Watson, that's at least four who are valuable state players.

Does Thornely count as an allrounder in people's eyes here?
Not a tremendously good one, but he's been playing as one a bit more in recent times. Bowled a lot in his last stint for Hampshire, anyway. Grant Lambert seemed a handy all-rounder towards the end of the season for NSW, might have an impact next year. Pretty sharp with the ball, and his record in club cricket indicates he's a good batsman.

I would like to think guys like Haddin, Ronchi [in 2 years time] can also be called [Keeping] all-rounders.

He's a tad old though really, and NSW selectors seem reluctant to pick him for whatever reasons - especially early in the year. He seems to have to prove himself every year in grade cricket despite finishing the year reasonably well for NSW... only to find himself back in the side by the end of the season... odd.

Yeah, but it's a moot point. They aren't going to replace Watson's role in the side, are they? Keeping allrounders are basically a given requirement these days.

Thornley is a one day all-rounder, I think it'd be fair to say.

Lambert just is a bit too military medium to worry the best of FC players. One of those guys who is a really good 2nd XI player for NSW, but will never be able to hold down a spot in the side for good, IMO.

He bowled at around 133-138 for NSW in certain spells in the Pura Cup final. There's slower specialist bowlers in FC cricket than him, I'd dare say.
