Super Eight

Yes, but 4 chances is still significantly fewer than 6 chances - lose 2 of the 4 and that's it.
Nah. Two wins from four + two wins from Ireland, Bangladesh = four wins (and three defeats), which should be enough to at least see it down to an NRR fight for fourth place.

You're dead with three losses, though.

It doesn't favour any of the teams - all Super 8 teams play each other once in the end. WI have already played Ireland and SL have already played BD... but the points carry through, so it's not a disadvantage. NZ and Australia have taken points through and are still to play both Ireland and BD - but it doesn't really "favour" them as such.. they earnt that by beating England and South Africa respectively in their Group stage.

Still a slight chance with 3 wins 4 losses, but yea.

If any team loses to Ireland and/or Bangladesh (should they be confirmed to be the 8th Team in Super 8) in the Super 8 - they are certain of not reaching the Semis .

Well, as an Englishman, I was wondering if I'd ever post in this thread.:)

I'm practically certain I won't in the semi-finals thread, mind.
Don't be so sure... England could lift their game in Super 8 and if they get 3 wins of these 4 games - v SA, v Australia , v SL , v West Indies - they would get to Semis .(assuming they beat Bang and Ireland).

Does any one know what the Super 8 points table would be like ?

Is it only NRR against the Team that comes through to Super 8 that carries forward or overall NRR ?

Either way I am guessing Super 8 table to look like this -
(based on possible NRR)

Sri Lanka 2 points
New Zealand 2 points
West Indies 2 points
Australia 2 points
India or Bangladesh 0 points
England 0 points
South Africa 0 points
Ireland 0 points

Any corrections .. ?

I am guessing that 4 wins out of 6 games in Super 8 ( ie 10 points) would assure a Semi Final spot. (assuming you are carrying 2 points from group stage other wise 5 wins out of 6 needed I suspect.)

8 points may give a Semifinal spot but that would be touch and go .

Interesting to note the Venues for Semi finals are totally different from those of Super 8 .

JASON

Cricketer Of The Year
does it matter?
so long as every team is playing on same venues it probably wouldn't ...only if it came to a NRR scenario...

(between Queens Park Oval, Port of Spain and Warner Park, St.Kitts there is an obvious difference as was quite clear in the matches played there yesterday and today respectively. )

Australia are playing at Antigua (well reputed as a free scoring ground the World over - with Sir B.C Lara's 2 record scores there ..:) ) on 3 occasions , with Grenada on 2 occasions and Bridgetown, Barbados once only.

While SA will play at Guyana 3 times, Bridgetown once and Grenada twice,
NZ will play in Antigua twice, Guyana once and Grenada 3 times, West Indies will play in Antigua twice, Guyana once, Grenada once and Barbados twice ,England will play in Guyana once , Antigua twice and Barbados 3 times, and SL will play in Guyana twice, Antigua once and Grenada three times.

As long as NRR doesn't determine the Semifinalists this should be ok, but then again NRR may come in, in deciding last semifinalist and as you can imagine different pitches are conducive to boosting NRR to facilitate qualification and it may turn out unfair for one or the other of the final qualifiers who may get knocked out on NRR .

Looks like the Guyana ground may not be ready and some matches may be moved...

I feel sorry for Guyana, who might now miss out on quite a few World Cup games.

But Queens Park Oval will favour South Africa since it is a low scoring ground with plenty there for the seamers (as was seen in the India v SL match) . SA seamers will relish it.

I would be very disappointed as a Sri Lankan if they moved the game to Queens Park Oval from Guyana. Why not move it Antigua or one of the other Super 8 Venues ?

As a SL fan iam pleased that SL's last S8 game is against Ireland, if one or two of the semifinalist come down to NRR (a good chance that it will), it is good that you play the weakest team so you know by how much you need to better your NRR by.
