VVS Laxman - World Cup Exclusion

Arjun

Cricketer Of The Year
The time when VVS Laxman was left out of the ODI side for obvious reasons, the Indian team had problems at both extremes. While Ganguly and Kumble, among their best ODI players, were inept on the field and between wickets (Kumble couldn't bat at all, and still can't), the ODI specialists who offerred more than one skill, were not good enough for the team on any skill. As some of those ODI specialists improved, especially the batsmen, Laxman's time was running out. He deserved more chances in the ODI side ahead of those specialists, but his weaknesses in the field and between wickets went against him. Surprisingly, it didn't go against nearly half the current Indian ODI squad for the World Cup.

Does anyone else find it hilarious that someone who claims that Nuwan Zoysa and Munaf Patel are allrounders also claims that Anil Kumble "couldn't bat at all and still can't"?

Not really. I've gotten used to "Yuvraj is not a match-winner", "Yadav and Bangar have been screwed repeatedly" and "Yusuf Pathan hits big 6s, he's an India prospect now".

(Kumble couldn't bat at all, and still can't),
Kumble used to be a fairly effective lower order batsman. I haven't seen him lately but I don't see any reason to believe his batting ability has dried up.

And Nuwan Zoysa as an all-rounder?

ROTFLMAO.

Are you kidding me? Munaf patel can't bat for his life, leave alone talks of him being an all-rounder its probably the biggest joke of the century.

Now, there could be several reasons why VVS pulled out of the Hyderabad squad - not necessarily that he ws upset with his exclusion from the Indian national team as Cricinfo are suggesting

BUT....do you guys feel Laxman deserved more chances at ODI level ? Was he unfairly treated ?
Laxman is not a good enough batsman to be able to play in ODIs with the paucity of his fielding.

Ganguly is.

Sadly, slips are only ODI positions for 10 overs - sometimes less.

As a ground-fielder, Laxman - unlike Dravid - is unable to transfer his brilliance in the slips.

It's been about as good as could be reasonably expected. I genuinely hope Ganguly will have a triumphant final chapter to his ODI career.
So do I, he is arguably the third best ODI player in Indian history (Tendy, Dev, Ganguly). But time is a cruel thing, and it catches up to everyone. Ganguly has done well since coming back though, and I'm glad to admit I was wrong. Not convinced he can keep it up through the WC though.

It'd have been more accurate to say I genuinely believe my hope of Ganguly having a triumphant final chapter will come true.

Time catches-up with everyone, sure, but 34 isn't that old.

Ganguly has done well since his return to the ODI side : his scores have been 98, 13,68,62,48.
And the pitches wern't exactly dire in all of those innings. IMO, he's batting a lot fluently after being releived of captaincy.
One sign that Ganguly is batting confidently and with panache is his 'picture-perfect-do-die-for' cover drives early on in his innings.
Much like tendulkar's 'defensive straight drive tracer bullet to the boundary' shot.
