West Indies Preliminary Squad

And yet he bats at 8 and 9 and bowls first or second change? How can you possibly think his batting is his primary point of selection?

You make it sound like he's monopolizing a batsman's spot. He's picked as a BOWLER. He's picked in place of a bowler, not a batsman. So he's not keeping a better batsman out of the team. If anything, he's keeping a better bowler out of the team.
1) Only recently he was batting higher up the order for the West Indies even when his bowling was his stronger suit at that point. Bowlers don't usually get sent up the order to bat 3 or 4 in ODs. And he bats lower because he's the batsman best capable of utilizing the last 10 overs along with Sarwan.

2) Right about keeping a better bowler out though.

He is not capable of utilizing the last 10 overs, as evidenced by him getting out consistently cheaply due to having to slog mindlessly so often. Not that he'd do any better up the order. The fact that he gets more bowling opportunities than batting opportunities makes it pretty obvious why he's in the team.

True about his reason for being selected. Still it's horrible to see a batsman having to rely on his bowling to make the team. Same with Samuels for a period last year but at least he's now doing what he's supposed to be doing and be a batsman. Only hope that Smith can find some form soon. A quickfire 30 or 40 is good enough progress for him now. Eventually he should get 50s regularly with the odd hundred. His temperament won't advance that much IMO to get hundreds by the fold.

Samuels has had opportunities to bat up the order of late. Smith has not. Not that I think it'd make much of a difference tbh. I think Smith plays way too much OD cricket and way too little longer form cricket. He was starting to build innings when playing for Barbados in 4D cricket, but he doesn't play it often enough.
