South Africa's Rhodes breaks bone in hand

Jonty Rhodes broke a bone in his hand during the World Cup Group B match against Kenya on Wednesday, team officials announced at a press conference.

An x-ray confirmed the break and Rhodes was immediately sent to Johannesburg to consult a specialist.

Another ominous sign :!(

England all rounder Craig White's World Cup campaign could be over before he bowls a single delivery on Wednesday after he suffered a recurrence of a side strain injury.

White will be examined by the England medical team after complaining of discomfort from his left side after net practice in Cape Town.

"Craig has a history of side problems and we are at the 11th hour so we have to make a decision," England captain Nasser Hussain said.

White first sustained the injury during the fourth test against Australia in December in Melbourne, ruling him out of action for six weeks.

He bowled a full spell during a warm-up match against Border last week without experiencing any pain.

"He was fine when he bowled 10 overs last week but he felt it on Tuesday and has not improved much since," Hussain added.

If White's relapse is serious, England will ask to call up areplacement, with batting all-rounder Adam Hollioake and fast bowler James Kirtley the likely candidates.

damn

Hard luck Jonty.

He did look a lil' clumsy on the field against the Windies- by Jonty's standards. Did he fumble in the Kenya match? Did anyone see it?

yeh especially as the world cup is his swansong, a real tragedy to end on such a low.
I dont think it will effect SA as much, while he is a livewire in the field, his batting although good is not of the highest order.
Dont know who will replace him, hope not Peterson! Oh for a Graham Smith

Well this is not going to be my favourite world cups. Warne is out, and now Jonty is out.

So sad. What a way to finish.

I've loved great fielders ever since the day I met Colin Bland in the 1960s (1965 I think).

I used to even watch Leicestershire (ugh) just to watch Gower and Notts (double ugh) just to watch Randall.

Still, Herschelle Gibbs is no slouch.
