NZ World Cup Squad

What are your thoughts on the New Zealand World Cup squad.

I think that Fleming is very lucky to be there. He has failed with the bat many times opening and it seems that his place is down the order more if anywhere in the oneday team at all. But he keeps stating that he wants to open.

Harris is another selecton that I would question. We now have so many good alrounders with Styris, Cairns, Adams, Mills and Oram. This is too many alrounders going and harris seems the weaker one.

Vincent is lucky. I think his wicketkeeping backup skills may have saved him .

The team is

Stephen Fleming (captain), Nathan Astle, Mathew Sinclair, Craig McMillan, Lou Vincent, Chris Cairns, Brendon McCullum, Chris Harris, Andre Adams, Jacob Oram, Kyle Mills, Daniel Vettori, Daryl Tuffey, Shane Bond, Scott Styris.

As an outside, it's inconceivable to me that Harris wasn't going to go.

NZ are IMO a bit like Zimbabwe in that they have a lot of multi-utility players in the squad. A good thing in ODI, but bad in Tests.

I think Harris has got the nod because of his experience and will be a back up rather than starting player. He could almost be looked at as cover for Cairns should he not make the trip re injury.

Fleming has to put his hand up to open as there is no one else to do it. As there is no other specialist ODI opener in the squad to partner Astle, Fleming is almost obliged to take the role. My other option would be Vincent as he opens in Tests, but at the moment he is more valuable lower down with his quick 2's etc - I just wish he would forget about trying to improvise until he has 50 on the board & he should be concentrating on batting thru the innings. Another alternative could be Sinclair as he has done so in the past.

A fairly predictable 15 with the fast medium pacers getting the nod ahead of specialist slower bowlers. I am still a little concerned by so many ODI All rounders rather than an extra specialist batsman.

:ticking:

a bit ironic don't you think when the NZ test team is currently rated 3rd, whereas the ODI side is about 3rd last!!!!

Personally I would have Nevin and Richardson in the squad as well. There is no way why Richardson cannot perform a Dravid/Bevan type role in the ODI's as he is a class, class performer in Tests.

Cricket is full of these ironies - it's what makes us all love the game!

Fleming isn't lucky to be there! He's the Captain! That's the only reason why Ganguly is still in the Indian Team remember! I would rather take an experianced and proven keeper in Nevin than take McCullum who hasn't showed much with the bat and despite some good displays with the gloves he's still a bit unproven. Nevin can open too! Hitchcock is a fine bowler but he has missed out due to the ammount of quality ODI All-Rounders New Zealand now have. Harris will play a different role now with so many All-Rounders, most probably to tie up an end. I'm looking at the squad and New Zealand have a lot of bowling options. The Dark Horses again anyone?

That is NZ for you though - all bits and pieces players. Somehow it seems to pay off more often than not though. They always look like a team who are better than you think they are. Underrated, underestimated. For me England might be in a similar position this time around but ultimately neither side is strong enough to think about winning the tournament.

Right, another totally insane comment again.

Hitchcock is a very fine bowler, you don't average in the low 20's in ODIs without doing well.

Kyle Mills...you say he throws, have the match refs? No? Well then I think they have a better idea than you do!

Harris will only bowl if needed, he has a lot of support.

Oram is in the form of his life, how you can say he is rubbish is beyond me!

I agree about Vincent, he is lucky to be there.

McMillan is a superb batsman, just out of form for the 1st time in ages. Of course he can bat!

Mcullum is lucky to be there but you've got to accept that.

Tuffey is only really a "Home player" but he could be useful you never know.

Why have you got so much against Hitchcock and Mills though?

Underrated unless you are Indian, which because they are beating India who they tip to win the World Cup, they tip New Zealand to win too!

Actually there's been reports today that his action is a bit dubious...

Note I am not commenting on his action one bit as I've never seen him chucking, erm I mean bowling.

I saw him bowl, it's not chucking unless he's got worse...a lot worse...

I think that Kyle Mills's action is chucking. sometimes it is alright but that effort ball is not alright. I am sure that if he bowls at the world cup, he will run into problems, and i thought that because of it he wouldn't be selected in the squad.

On the subject of chucking, does anyone else get WCM - interesting photo of Brett Lee in there...

Not sure how people can call him a chucker.

He's now played 14 one-day internationals and in those has been in front of top senior umpires. Don't you think if there was a problem it would have been brought up by now?
