Prasad, Sehwag guide Somerset to first game win

A superb debut performance from Prasad and a typically stubborn century from the blade of Sehwag have given Somerset the start they were looking for at the beginning of the 4D season.

Choosing to bat first, Sehwag and his captain set about as they had done in the pre-season friendlies, positively destroying the Leics bowling. They weren't scoring fast, but they managed to guide the score easily to 134 before the first wicket fell. Sharath hoiking a pull off Adams to Yashpal in the deep. However the wicket didn't seem to inspire much confidence in Leicestershire and their fortunes hardly improved much from that point. Consistent partnerships were had, Langer made a steady 24, Chougale 73 and Youhana 51. The astonishing part of it all was that the whole top 5 was on their Somerset debut. That top 5 took the score past 350, with Sehwag eventually falling to Yashpal for a superb 151. Indeed the only batsman to fail was the one man who had played last season, Rayadu, who made 0. Somerset finished on 435.

The Leicestershire first innings went in a blur of Prasad. The young second pick paceman was on fire, showing all the potential he had in an inspired performance. It all seemed to happen so quickly. Before they knew it, the Leics were reduced to 8/217 with Prasad taking every wicket. He couldn't get the perfect 10, although it was still an amazing performance. Yashpal and Ogden were the only shining lights in the 253 compiled.

Sharath then decided to enforce the follow on which turned out to be the correct choice. This time round, Somerset shared the wickets, although a very accurate spell of bowling from Lawson did yeild 5 successes. Prasad added 2 more to his tally, finishing with 10/115 for the match. Ogden again chimed in with a good half ton but he couldn't save his team from slumping to 267. Somerset were set only 86 for victory, which they obligingly made with only 2 wickets down.

Altogether a good win and a great start to the season.:)

Warwickshire retain Prefontaine Cup.

It must have been one of the best batting displays in WCC history. Although short of their personal best of 620/5 dec in season 3, it was a superb effort none the less. Sathish (66) and Hemanath Kumar (57) got things off to a good start. They put on 97 for the first wicket. When Howarth joined Sriram at 172/2 the pair rattled off a partnership of 331, Warwickshire record. Howarth enjoyed his highest score making an unbeaten 175*, while Sriram surpassed 2000 runs for Warwickshire in WCC in his innings of 179. Further back up came from Upton Wilmott on his WCC four day debut as he made 56. The innings was declared at 590/4

In reply Worcestershire struggled after Habib and Walker had put on 124 for the first wicket. A top spell from Ismael Nelsona (4/30) and Malcolm Jones (5/55) sore them lose score only another 68 runs as they were bundled out for 192.

Following though Warwickshire faced resistance Lowe (176)and Lovell (134). The pair saw Worcestershire through to 445/4, but Gregson came on and after a disapointing destroyed the tail as Worcestershire were all out for 463.

Needing 71 to win Sriram and Sathish saw Warwickshire home after the early loss of Hemanath Kumar. A 9 wicket win is just the start Warwickshire wanted

South Australia beat Karnakata, Again!

South Australia hosted title favourites karnakata in the first round of four day cricket for season 5. Karnakata won the toss and batted on a pretty good deck. The batsmen were looking for some redemption after last weeks disapointed effort in the one day game.
Karnakata made slow progress for their 343 runs. E Howarth (65), S Borde (65) and K Ali (40) were the best of the lot. the most disapointing thing for them would have to be the ammount of starts in the top order with no one going onto a massive score. Best of the bowlers was star recruit Keith Ferguson who took 6/64. Snow also chipped in with a couple in the middle order.

South Australia mde the best of the batting conditions, compiling a massive 539. Highlight by a 2nd wicket stand of over 170 between Hagis Midlane and Benny Allen. Top scorers were Midlane (118), Nathan Adam (106), Allen (79) and Arasu (53). Wadekar took 4 wickets for the visitors.

Karnakata in the second dig had a real go, but again fell short of what was really needed. Bowled out for 324, Sean Maxwell made 93, Jones 57 and Kale 51 were the only others to offer any resistance to the great SA attack. Snow picked up 4/40 in a great spell of spin bowling and Eddie Graham took 2, the first time hes really bowled well since joining the top club.

4/132 was enough to see SA get home in comfortable fashion. Nathan Adam followed up his first innings century with 41 not out while Frank Hammett again looked good, but would consider himself unlucky to have lost his wicket for 32. Ali grabbed 3 wickets for karnakata.

SA again proving the so called experts wrong again by beating side apparently a lot higher fancied. we have to be happy with this start to the season, a 6 wicket win against this lot is a good effort. while i expevt karnakata to be battling for relegation, in this division, any win is a good win.

Well rounded performance see's Province home

IT was one of the most anticipated clashes in Western Province's history... They're back in division 3 and ready to mount an attack. How would they fair?

Captain Carden won the toss and gave the home crowd what they wanted to see, he and Rabbi Llewellyn opening the batting. Undoubtedly the two best batsman over the past 3 seasons strode to the middle and immediately got the show on the road.

Rabbi looked at home at Newlands as he begun taking to the bowling in a big way, whilst Darden complemented him beautifully down the other end. Both batsman looked set to bat the day until Darden was dismissed for 60. This sparked a minor collapse. The score slumped from 0-166 to 6-260. However the retaliation from debutant Dicky Jacobs and Jimmy Schofield really showed what Province cricket is all about, awesome depth. The pair put on 132 before Hasnain broke through getting rid of Jacobs for 72. The tail then crumbled giving Glamorgan a chance as Province posted 417.

Uncle Gul struck 2nd ball of his first class career when Jimmy Schofield snared an absolute gem at short leg and the wind was back in the sails of Province. From them Trev Darden didn't look back as he managed his bowlers around very professionaly, as each bowler took part in dismantling Glamorgan for 207 with Gul, Matthie and Friend being the multiple wicket takers.

Glamorgans follow effort showed more resistance as Strauss and Van Jaarsveld look to get them back in with a chance. Through some excellent work behind the stumps however from Dicky J Province were able to slice through the middle order. Some lower order dogged batting from Harbijhan Singh made things a little interesting however as soon as he looked to take on the bowlers. However some smart bowling from Uncle Gul soon had "side away" and Province chasing 103 to victory.

Darden and Llewellyn put the icing on the cake as they achieved their target with both wickets in tac. This time it was Darden who took the challenge up as he past yet another career 50.

All in all a fine performance from this side.
Slats4ever: "A good win here, and the seasons looking good. Darden and Llewellyn lived up to expectation and the performance from Dicky Jacobs on debut was great with both bat and gloves"

Local Derby ends in draw

Guyana hosted Jamaica in the most anticipated clash of division five. Guyana have been touted as the most improved side of Season Five and were tipped by many to beat Jamiaca convincingly.

Guyana won the toss and elected to bat on a beautiful wicket that was expected to harvest runs, runs and more runs, and the record crowd was not disapointed. Ardley (124) and Francis (15) started the Guyanan innings well, both using good judgement and setting themselves for big innings, however it was not to be for Francis when he edged a ball outside off stump off the bowling of Oram (3-48). It was the first mistake by Francis, but it was a costly one. Guyanan captain Martin Love (36) joined Ardley for a well constructed 96 run partnership where Love played anchor to Ardley's attacker. The fall of Love, meant the lunch break with Guyana on 2-132. Another big partnership then developed between the improving Ardley and division one recruit Jayawardne (127). The two combined brilliant stroke play and punished any poor bowling by the Jamaicans. Ardley became too adventurous and fell to Savage, Ardley and Jayawardne combined for a 89 run partnership. Jayawardne then combined well with the middle order and with rookie Jenkins (46) and former captain McKenzie (30) took the score to 5-359. The tail produced some good runs and left Guyana with a healthy total of 469.

The Jamaican's took to the pitch early on day two, where there were more runs expected and that is what happened. Dippenaar (65) and Cowe (128) combined for a 110 partnership that put Jamaica firmly back on the front foot. It wasn't until the introduction of Ardley (2-56) that Guyana pegged Jamaica back, his two quick wickets had Jamaica at 2-125. However, the middle and late order of Jamaica pilled on more runs and and left Jamaica only 17 runs behind Guyana on the first innings.

Guyana began their second innings late on day three and with the match effectively without much chance of a result the Guyanan's used the innings to get some valuble match practice, after such a long break. Ardley (16) and Francis (5) fell quickly, and it was up to Love (44) and Jayawardne to restore the balance. The Guyanan crowd were once again treated to a display by Jayawardne, his 157 meant he is the first player under the management of Kyle Wright to score centuries in both innings of a match and is set to become a crowd favourite in Guyana. Once again the middle and lower order combined to set another score of over 400.

With nothing much to play for Jamaica faced 19 overs and the match ended in a tame draw. Martin Love has come under critisism from some quarters as to why he did not set Jamaica a final innings run chase. However, Guyana whilst disapointed at not winning the game are pleased to come away with a draw and will look to build on a season which has started well.

Guyana 469

Jayawardne 127
Ardley 124
Oram 3-48
Savage 2-67

Northern Knights lose cross-town fight

The team coined WCC's worst team, Northern Districts, have begun the season in predictable fashion, with a crushing loss to croos town foes Auckland.
A First innings total of 173 a/o was not a good start for the struggling Knights, whose poor pre-season trading has badly affected the team's balance.
Auckland batsman Roberts then cracked a magnificent 42 (49) to continue the Knights woes.
Manager Dylan Jellett, WCC's youngest member, said he was "absolutely shattered" with the loss and also said that "there would be punishments" to poor performers.
Jellett, who was last seen sharpening a butcher's knife before entering the player's change rooms, is also under investigation from Victoria Police after 3 poor players from his last management post, Academy side Flower's XI, were found with severe stab wounds.

(BTW ND lost)
