The biggest shock is the release of season 4 captain Bilbo Smith. Only one season ago he was regarded as Worcestershire's best all-round batsman, but after poor form, the improvement of some existing squad members, and the emergence of some exciting rookies, he narrowly missed the final cut. Smith is reported to be disgusted at his axing, saying "This is f****** b******* of the f****** highest f****** order, I can't f****** believe this b*******, f*** it. How could they pick a mediocre rookie like Alistair Lovell ahead of me??!? I'm this teams captain and senior batsman, and he's a nobody!"

Manager Thierry Henry was shocked by Smith's tirade.
"Bilbo is a good friend of mine and a great player", said Henry. "I'm amazed at how ungraciously he's taken this decision. It's no secret that in the end it came down to Alistair and him, and we thought Alistair was the player for the future. It's just business, I thought Bilbo of all people would understand".

"I hope he gets picked up in the draft and performs well for a new team."
