Season 2 Awards Night
Welcome to the second annual World Club Cricket awards night. Tonight we will honour and praise all those that have achieved success this season as well as recount what has been another great year for WCC. We have many awards to get through tonight so lets get started.
The first award of the night is the rookie of the year. This seasons batch of youngsters displayed some great individual performances throughout the season with a number among the best in their teams statistically. Coming third in this award is Yorkshire batsman J Bradshaw. Finishing runner up was the leading run scorer in this years Twenty20 competition Cobras batsman B Allen. In a very close vote Tasmanian bowler G Allen wins the award by 1 vote and wins this years Rookie of the year award. Allen was amazing in First Class cricket in particular where he took 54 wickets at a shade over 23. Well done to to him. |

The First of our divisional awards to be given out is the Division 2 one day player of the year award. In a competition that was dominated by the bat its no surprise to see three batsman at the top of the pile here. Coming third was Titans opener A Holland. Cobras star B Allen picks up his second runners up award of the night while the winner is no surprise really, with a season high 843 runs the winner is I Bowes of Kandurata. A brilliant season from the youngster in just his second year as a fulltime cricketer.

We will now take a look at some of the future stars of WCC, the academy this year was taken to Africa after last years success in the USA. The players made up of some of the worlds finest youngsters and some ever improving WCC stars put on a real show across 7 weeks for the African audiances. A number of these players will get a chance to shine next season and we look forward to seeing them progress. This award is for Academy player of the year, please note any player contracted to a current WCC is ineligible to win. There were many standout performances and the player the judges have chosen as player of the year is K Demming of Dakar. The spinner was a standout in both forms of the game, in First Class he took an impressive 51 wickets @ 20.06 and in OD he was just as strong with 20 wickets @ 24.90.

We now move on to our second divisional awards, this time is the Division 1 one day player of the year award. Last years winner P Jaques was attempting to defend his title but an injury late in the season saw him finish just outside the top three. We did have a tie for third though with Yorkshire's C Taylor and Queenslander M Hayden gaining 8 votes with 2 man of the match performances each, impressive seasons from the pair of them. Another Yorkshire player in S Mushtaq finished second with 9 while the clear winner was M North of Victoria. North who struggled to get a game as a batsman for WA last year was recruited to fill the all rounders role in the Bushrangers line up, he started with 5/8 against his former side and never looked back. With 13 votes he is our division 1 one day player of the year.

It's now time to have a look at some First Class cricket, this award is for the Division 2 First Class player of the year. Our top three saw Redbacks bowler J Gillespie tie on 8 votes with Tasmanian all rounder H Le Roux. Both had fine seasons and for Le Roux in particular a great effort in his debut season. The winner though collecting his second trophy of the night is WCC rookie of the year and now Division 2 player of the year Tasmania fast bowler G Allen. A splendid night for Allen indeed.

Now we see the introduction of a new award, here we acknowledge an outstanding performance by an individual on the field throughout the season. The judges narrowed it down to two and these were their choices; runner up goes to Warwickshire fast bowler N Tahir for his remarkable 9/49 against Auckland in round 6. He singled handedly bowled the Kiwis out for 134 and set up an important victory. But first place has gone to Queensland batsman M Hayden. In round 9 of the one day competition Hayden smashed his second career One Day double century, this tme against Yorkshire. He fell one run short of his record score in making 212* off 155 balls but no other player has come close to this mark and it trully is a great effort.

The final divisional award of the night is of course the Division 1 First Class player of the year. Kandurata quick bowler A Ganegama can be satisfied with his season in finishing third in this award a very good effort by him. Cobras captain and opening batsman smashed a WCC record 1304 runs but it wasnt enough to claim the title as he had to settle for second place. Going back to back in this award is M Muralitharan. The Sri Lankan spinner shared this award in season one, but with 13 votes this year he claims the title by 1 vote and with a season high 62 wickets he is a deserved winner.

Our second last award of the night recognises the men behind the scenes, our managers. WCC saw a slight turn over of managers in season 2 and are hopefully our current batch will see it through to the end of the next campaign. Coming in third after steering his team to his second WCC title is Auckland manager Raghav. Raghav added the division 2 first class title to go with last seasons one day division 2 triumph. Despite not winning a title the judges have found it hard to go past Queensland manager Mister Wright for second place, juggling injury crisis after suspensions after injury crisis Queensland were well in the hunt for First Class glory until they just ran out of steam, a great management performance throughout the season by Mister Wright though. But for the second year in a row Kandurata manager Chaminda_00 wins this award, his two titles including the Division one first class trophy and the Twenty20 competition make him an obvious choice, well done to him.

An we finally get to the big award for the night, the WCC player of the year. Defending champion M Hayden of Queensland this season ran equal 13th so we have a new winner, who will it be? Running in the top three for the second straight year is M Muralitharan, the Kandurata spinner gained 15 points to finish in third place, just one vote behind our winner. Our top two have finished equal on points so for the first time ever it comes down to man of the match votes, finishing second is Titans batsman A Holland with 16 votes and 2 man of the matches. Holland lead the Titans batting line up superbly all year and deserves this recognition. And finally to our winner, with 1304 runs @ 81.50 in First Class and 395 runs @ 43.89 in one day cricket the winner is Cobras captain G Smith. Polling 16 votes he wins the award due to his 5 man of the match performances. A huge effort from the inspirtational captain.
That brings us to the end of the awards for this season, we wish luck to the teams competing in the upcoming play off matches and hopes everyone enjoys the excitement of the all star series thats also not far away. |
