Mashonaland Awards

Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
It was a disappointing season for Mashonaland, the Zimbabwean team only just managing to hang onto Division 5 in one day, and sinking down to the lowest division in first class. Despite that, manager AndyC was looking to have a good time, as anyone would be when flanked by Eliza Cuthbert and Jennifer Hawkins. The night got under way quickly, with veteran C Ramanayake showing the youngsters how to do it in a quick few rounds of shots to liven up the evening. It was a good thing that he won the drinking competition, cause he sure as hell wasn't going to win much else.

After the night was officially opened with a speech from AndyC and team captain Saqlain Mushtaq, the awards got underway. Most award nights consist of voting to determine the winner, but don't forget that this is Zimbabwe, so instead AndyC just chose whichever players he liked the most.

So the awards were:
For four day:
Bowler of the season: S Mushtaq-- 47 wickets at 25.34
-No competition really. Two five fors and a 10 for in his 47 wickets. The most consistent bowler for the team, he sent down over 400 overs in the season for around 2.8 runs per over.

Batsman of the season: G Eaton-- 701 runs at 41.24
-Possibly the closest decision of the night, with G Burns having the highest average and M Ul-Haq with the most runs. Eaton however, played one less match than Ul-Haq, and struck two fine centuries and five half centuries, especially when they really mattered.

Player of the season: S Mushtaq-- 47 wickets at 25.34, 194 runs at 13.86
-Again, not much competition for Saqlain. He really carried the bowling attack, and also chipped in with two half centuries.

One day:
Bowler of the season: K Sami-- 12 wickets at 23.67
-Despite his season being cut short by injury, he performed well in his eight games, although was never at his best after his comeback. Despite Mushtaq taking more wickets, Sami had two less games, and a better average, and besides, he couldn't take all the of the awards.

Batsman of the season: R Arnold-- 381 runs at 76.2
-Ignore the average inflated by the fact that half of his 10 innings were not outs. He scored the most runs for the team, and hit the only century of the season.

Player of the season: R Arnold- 381 runs at 76.2, 8 wickets at 37.88
-His all-round efforts won him this award. The highest averaging batsman and third lowest averaging bowler in the squad. Was willing to stand up for the team when needed.

Finally, the Player of the Year Award was to be awarded. Before manager AndyC opened his mouth to begin his speech, Saqlain Mushtaq was already making his way to stage, possibly because he just didn't want to hear another one of AndyC's speech.

S Mushtaq- Four day- 47 wickets at 25.34, 194 runs at 13.86
One day- 14 wickets at 27.21, 39 runs at 13 (8th best batsman for the team)
-The only player re-selected for next season. 'Nuff said.

With the meaningless awards out of the way, the team could stop drinking and get set for the award they'd all been waiting for:
The first ever AndyC Memorial Award for the Most Underperforming Player of the Season (ACMAMUPS)

This was a tough decision for AndyC, mainly because the team generally all played crap. Many players were in serious contention for this award- SD Malik, J Barnwell, E Durrant, G Andrew and W Khan, to name a few, while V Waragoda made a push for it later in the season. Thanks to some good performances at the end of the season and in the CW Bar Cup, Malik narrowly avoided the award, while W Khan's five-for ensured his mantlepiece would remain empty and Waragoda's score of 150 took him out of the running. Finally, however, after much deliberation, the award went to two players- 'Bowler' G Andrew and 'batsman' E Durrant.

G Andrew- Four day- 2 games, 40 overs, 2 wickets at 70.5
One day- 2 games, 10 overs, 0 wickets for 62 runs.
-Just plain crap from Andrew

E Durrant- Four day- 3 games, 106 runs at 17.67
One day- 9 games, 200 runs at 28.57
-Horrible four day batting, and although his 28.57 made him fifth on the list of one day batsman, it's just not a good average, and he only hit only 50, that being a not out 82 which no doubt boosted his average.

After a rather dejected Durrant and Andrew received their awards, the night wound to a close, mainly because they had run out of grog. AndyC stepped into his limo, accompanied by his two lovely ladies, leaving all the other members of the team to ride their bikes home or wait for their mate around the corner to give them a lift. Who said Zimbabwe cricket was struggling?
