Barbados vs Chittagong

Many people expected Chittagong to struggle this season, especially in First Class cricket, where the batting looked weak and the bowling too reliant on home conditions. Thus the solid start to the season has thus come as a surprise to many. Prior to the tricky away trip to Barbados they had won one out of two One Day matches, the other a close loss, and won the first match in the longer format, albeit by default. Even so you would have got long odds against a Chittagong victory in the Caribbean.

Captain Indulkar, at 20 one of the youngest captains in WCC history, saw his bowlers restrict Barbados to 237 in the first innings, a very good effort alround, especially from the fielders. The loss of seven wickets to the spin of Fanning and Hasan was encouraging with Hasan's 4-50 the pick. Guneratne offered most resistance with an agressive 73 but apart from an uncharacterically dour innings from Pietersen, application seemed rare amongst the Barbados batsmen.

When it was Chittagong's turn to bat, the bowlers were made to suffer, the opening partnership between Hurley and the veteran Abedin cruised to 195 before Hurley was caught in front just one short of a century. The Old Man at the other end just carried on regardless though. At 40 years of age this is probably Abedin's swan song, and in this match he looked determined to leave his mark on WCC history, adding 95 with captain Indulkar and 145 with Walker, he kept going past his double century and, after receiving some explosive support from Kellar, completed an astounding triple century to leave his team firmly in command. The declaration came soon afterwards at 615-8 and a lead of 378.

Kellar followed his muscular innings with a devestating spell to remove the top four batsmen and leave no doubt as to the result. Walker capped a fine all round performance with 3-43 and Hasan picked up another 2 wickets as Barbados barely mustered any resistance in being bowled out for 177 and conceding defeat by an innings and 201 runs.

So Chittagong go on, knowing that the rest of the season will not be as easy as this and that if the level is dropped, they could be the ones on the receiving end of the next crushing defeat. If they can build on the start though, they could be there or thereabouts when the promotion places are decided. For Barbados, there may be some tough practise sessions in the week ahead, but i'm sure they will come back fighting, and Chittagong must be wary when they visit Bangladesh.

More than the result though, this match will be remembered as the day Abedin rolled back the years, and rewrote the record books.

Colts Smashed by Tasmanians

Colts CC Slumped to its first defeat of the season yesterday, smashed by Tasmaina. While the Colts 4 day side was not expected to figure highly in the title chase a dominant batting display last week had hopes up.

The dream was borken early When Samuels and Canning took 4 Colts wickets for 84 runs, the colts batsmen never recovered with Akram and Rice taking 3 each to finish the job. Prosser again top scored with 77, Madanagopal the next highest, and only other batsman to pass 20 with 27. Colts 207 all out.

The Colts bowlers had their work cut out for them and unfortunatley they failed. Charlton was removed with the score on just 27 but after that the Tassie batsmen dominated. Roudolph made 44, Midlane, Goodwin and Symonds all making 50's and Rowell making a solid 128. Tasmania declaring with the score on 8/417 a lead of 210 runs.

Colts wickets again fell fairly constantly in the 2nd innings, Butt, Prosser and Troughton all failing, Madanagopal charged however and when he was joined by Razzaq things looked promising. Madanagopal was removed soon after for 64 leaving Razzaq to try and hit the colts out of trouble, he succeeded in forcing the tasmanians to bat again making 78 from 116 balls. a lower order partnership between Andrews and Jones setting the target at 67.

The Tasmanian batsmen didn't waste any time overhauling the score in the 17 over without loss.

Colts Manager age_master after the game "That first innings really killed our confidence, and they hit us while we were down, really taking the match away from us, pretty dissapointing loss. we have to stay focussed on the main goal for this season though, the OD and Cup Trophies."

Tamil Nadu v South Australia: The rivals first game!

Week one of the WCC season came around and the topic of nearly every conversation in cricket mad Adelaide and cricket crazy Chennai was four day division one. Whether it was Paul Kumble or Arjen Robben, Virender Sehwag or Ben Allen the players of the two teams were given star status.

Week one came and went and in Adelaide things didn't go to plan. Having to travel up North to the Gabba South Australia's bowlers were anything but penetrative, with Arjen taking match figures of 1/191. The match ended up in a draw after both teams piled on a huge amount of runs in their first innings'. One of SA's positives to come out of the match was Owen Foot, who, in South Australia's second innings was the first player in WCC history to hit a double century on debut 202 off 313 balls.

While South Australia struggled through for a draw, Tamil Nadu looked comfortable from the start at The Oval. The end result was a 9 wicket win, Kumble taking 3/52 off 17 in the first innings and 7/11 off 6 in the second innings.

The battle lines were drawn for Four Day Round 2, South Australia v Tamil Nadu at the Adelaide Oval.

South Australia won the toss and made no hesitation to bat on what looked like a turner, with the 4th innings no doubt being played under difficult batting conditions. Things started poorly for SA at 1-18 with Midlane being dismissed for 13 after Harkness caught him in front, opening the bowling, an inspired move by Owen Cardew perhaps? Things started looking better when double centurion from last game Owen Foot came to the crease with Ben Allen. Their partnership was only 42 which is a reflection of SA's score, with 42 being the highest parnership of the innings. After Kumble took 3/36 Nawab was introduced and he ran throug the middle order in no time at all on the spin-friendly wicket. Hammett was brought on to bowl against his old team and helped himself to 3 wickets off 5 overs, conceeding 8 runs along the way. The final score of the innings read, South Australia 135 All Out.

Tamil Nadu was in the box seat now. However after losing their first wicket with only 20 runs to the score they needed someone to hang around. Sehwag did, unfortunately, no one else did. The middle order was dismissed in no time at all thanks mainly to Jimmy Anderson and Arjen Robben. However, not before Sehwag could pass his 50 (57 off 119) and Cowe (21) and Chandrasekhar(31) could both add valuable runs in the lower-middle order. Anderson and Robben plundered through the tail and after batting for just 50 overs, Tamil Nadu were dismissed for 171.

With only a 36 run defecit South Australia could set a good here and really put Tamil Nadu under alot of pressure in the 4th innings. Things didn't go to plan for the Australians, they lost both Allen and Foot before the deficit had been removed thanks to Harkness' brilliant opening exploits. Midlane played much the same role as Sehwag in Tamil Nadu's 1st innings and when he came together with Adam(36 off 64) things were looking good for SA. However Midlane was soon dismissed 2 short of his 50 (71) after a brilliant run out. At 5-130 SA needed good lower order runs. While Dravid (19), van Jaarsveld (17) and Robben (24) all toiled hard at the end of the day good bowling and a bad pitch got the better of them. Nawab taking 4/50 off 14 rounded the lower order up and Harkness' 3/19 off 11 opening the bowling was instrumental.

Tamil Nadu only required 151 runs to win the game, not the easiest of tasks on a 4th day pitch. However, Sehwag once again showed his experience and determination and played a craft knock of 42 off 71 balls to steer Tamil Nadu, with the help of Hammett (32*) and Chadnrasekhar (27*), to a 6 wicket win.

After being spoken to after the game Tamil Nadu manager had this to say, "It's just a great feeling. We knew at the start of the season the game against South Australia in Adelaide would be our toughest and to come through it with such a fine win, I couldn't be happier of the boys! I don't really want to single anyone in particular out, but if I do, it has to be Andrew Nawab. He was just amazing and taking 3/18 and 4/50 I really couldn't have asked much more of him. It was his responsibility being our premier spinner to be at his best against SA on thier turner and he responded with flying colours. Virender (Sehwag) and Vincenzo (Harkness) also deserve a pat on their back. Virender showed his experience and grittyness and put away his fantastic stroke play for this game. He truly is a model professional and it's just great to have him at the club. Vincenzo was asked by Owen and myself to open the bowling and for him to even say yes showed great determination, particularly in this crucial game. His performance was also top notch. While I could go on forever about how over the moon I am, I don't want to forget Simon Fitzsimmons and the SA boys. They gave us one hell of a match and could easily have got up. I think it's one of the greatest rivalries in WCC, even if this is only its first year, Simon and I have been rivals for a long time. Hats off to SA and good luck for the rest of the season as there is of course, there's still 8 games left. But having won 2 and SA winning 0 TN are confident, but we can't be ****y against the other Div 1 teams and we must make sure we beat SA in Chennai."

So there you have it folks, in what was an extremely low scoring game TN have proved the victors by 6 wickets. Andrew Cloete seems really happy with his team and we await to hear from South Australian manager Simon FItzsimmons at a later stage. That's all we have time for now, we'll leave you with some highlights of Andrew Nawab's 7 wickets.

Western Australia V Worcestershire

Western Australia Finally Step Up

It has been a while coming, but Western Australia have recorded their first win of the season, thrashing Worcestershire by 10 wickets. Although a convincing win, there are still plenty off concerns for manager Chris Butler. Once again Western Australia's top order crumbled to 66-5. Then a partnership of 302 between Tully, 152, and Ronchi, 139, added some respectiablity to the sscore. Western Australia were finally dissmissed for 396. Manager Chris Butler hinted at changes for the next 4 day match in a fortnight "Apart from the two centuries the next highest score was 21 and that is just unnacceptabe."

But any worries about Western Australia's bowlers were quickly dissmissed. with Jenkins dissmising Abid Ali without a run on the board. The young rookie, in just his second four day match then tour the heart out of Worcestershire innings. When he dissmissed Cope he had got his first 5 wicket bag. he finished wtih career best figures of 6-55. Shebourne aslo chipped in with 3 crucial top order wickets, finishing with 3-69.

Worcestershire were then asked to follow on. a fabulious opening partnership looked like they mgiht be able to save the game but, first Sullivan and then Jenkins took 2 wickets each to have Worcestershire at 190-4. from there Worcestershire crumbled to 270 all out, with Jenkins securing his second 5 wicket bag and his first 10 wicket match haul, with second innings fidures of 5-119 and match figures of 11-174.

Praker and Williams then set about chasing the samll total of 28, which they achieved with no problems. Best and Fairest, 1 point: Ronchi 2. points: Tully. 3 points: Jenkins.

Guyana Inconsistency Continues as Free State's Bowlers Capitilise

Many people have been tipping Guyana to be the outright favourites to win both titles in division five this season and with their promising start to the season that looked likely. However, Free State have given the title favourites an early wake up call. Batting first on a beautiful batting pitch the inexperienced Guyana side fell victim to a team bowling effort. No Free State bowlerd stood out, none had too, it was the Guyana batsmen's inability to handle the continuous pressure from the Free State bowlers that was the stand out performance on day one. Guyana sunk early to be 3-23 with both openers and captain Jayawardne following his first up double century with a golden duck were sent back early. Lewis (69*) was the only batsman to show any resourcefulness against the Free State bowlers as he saw Jenkins (12) Vernon (14) and de Villiers (6) all fall cheaply. Lewis was left to bat with the tail and farmed the strke for as long as he could to get Guyana 139, a score that would need them to bowl exceptionaly well to defend.

The Guyana bowlers got off to a good start, having Free State 5-143 and looked like dismissing Free State for not much more than their own first innings total. Arendse (42) and Hussey (98) combined for an 80 run partnership that saw Free State eventually reach 359 and a lead of 219. Hussey's innings was one of true class and patience and he showed the application that the Guyana batsmen were unable to show. His innings was cut tragically short two runs short of his century when Guyana's stand out bowler Zulch (4-63) got one to dip and turn and Hussey was caught brilliantly by Jayawardne at first slip.

Guyana got off to a worrying start in their second innings again losing Ardley early for a first ball duck and Clarkson (20) and Lewis (21) were soon to follow to leave Guyana limping at 3-58. It was then that Jayawardne was joined by Jenkins, and as the two got settled the mood changed out on the field. Like they had two weeks earlier they were playing with ellegance and ease in stark contrast to their first inning performances. The pair put on 100 runs without trouble, however one run later Bent got the crucial breakthrough when he managed to beat Jenkins in flight and knock off his off bail with Jenkins out on 67 after facing only 85 balls. Free State then went about putting the pressure on rookie Vernon, however he finally broke his early season form slump with a steady 67* that showed that Vernon can add performance to potential. After Jayawardne was dismissed for a dogged 76 the tail were not able to combine with Vernon and Guyana were all out for 337. A Halse was the pick of the Free State bowlers with 4-85.

Free State wasted no time in overhauling the 121 runs required for victory. They lost two quick wickets to be 2-10, however it was not enough to hamper Free States unbeaten fun in the four day competition this season.

Guyana will travel to New Zealand on Wednesday as they play their first away games of the season were they will hope to continue their one day form and resurect their four day chances when they face Northern Districts over two weeks.

Mashonaland vs Northern Distrcits

Mashonaland ended their disappointing start to the season, with Northern Districts lucky to escape with a draw.

ND won the toss and decided to bat, and, despite losing Fleming early for 11 to Khan, got off to a strong start, with A Holland again living up to the hype. He received strong support from Gow (46), and Warner (70). Following their dismissals, Sangakarra stepped up, and was happy to play second fiddle to Holland, who had his eyes set on a double century. This dream was unfulfilled, however, as Holland's stroke-filled innings came to an end on 174, thanks to a brilliant catch from Ul-Haq in the slips off a Sami ball that swung away just enough to catch the edge. The Northern Districts tail failed to wag, the last four batsmen were all dismissed for sub-10 scores. Sangakarra finished not out on a fine 57, whilst Khan and Sami both picked up 3 wickets. Northern Districts finished on 417, a very strong total, and an especially daunting one for Mashonland giving their recent performances.

The Mashonaland openers both got off to good starts, their partnership a strong 83 runs, before Waragoda was clean bowled by Khan for 37. Khan followed this up the next over, just clipping Malik's off stump, four runs short of his half century. This set the tone for the rest of the innings, with many of the Mashonaland batsmen failing to convert their starts into half centuries. George Eaton, in his first innings this season, was the only exception, and throughout his innings he struggled to find a partner as Khan worked his magic. Ul-Haq, Arnold, Durrant and Carver failed to capitalise on their starts, placing unwanted pressure on Eaton in his first innings. This pressure showed, as he fell to the first ball of Khan's third spell, just after he had clipped a marvelous four off his pads to reach his century. Mashonaland stumbled to 336 not out, after Z Khan managed to be the only bowler able to extract any life from the pitch, his 27 overs picking up 7/67.

Northern Districts came in and tried to up the pace, fearing a draw. Fleming (7) again fell early, and, much to the Mashonaland bowlers' delight, so too did Holland (25). The third wicket was lost with the score only on 58, but Gow and Warner hung on to pile a rapid partnership of 145 runs. Soon after Gow holed out to Holland at long-on for 80, Warner was trapped plumb in front by Ramanayake for 85 off just 90 balls. Ramanayake claimed his second wicket when he had Perera caught in the slips for 37, and Sangakarra (33*) soon made an unselfish declaration with the score on 291/6 off 77 overs, Sami again picking up 3 wickets.

The pressure was well and truly on the Zimbabwean batsmen now, chasing 373to win on a pitch that still had a lot in it for the batsmen. For the second time, Mashonaland had an opening partnership of 80, and again Malik failed to continue on from his start of 34. Waragoda always looked comfortable, however, and refused to let himself be intimidated by the bowler's pace. Eaton fell for an unsatisfying 16 following his stellar start to the season, but Ul-Haq showed his maturity, and was willing to play anchor to Waragoda, the pair notching up a 121 run partnership before Ul-Haq's stumps were unsettled by a blistering yorker from Lacey. Durrant, one of Mashonaland's most dependable batsmen last season, failed to shine again, and was bowled through the legs, deceived by Perera's spin. Waragoda was soon to follow, given out to a controversial lbw decision to Perera, despite Hawk-Eye showing that the ball was in fact too high. Arnold (37*) and Carver (24*) tried to score quickly as the day rolled on, but failed, their fifty partnership not enough to secure Mashonaland's first win. In the end, Mashonaland were stranded on 351/5, an agonising 22 runs short of victory.

When asked how he felt about the result, Mashonaland manager Andyc said, "I'm fairly disappointed, I really thought our batsmen could have done it. It was very much a team effort to get this close though, and I'm thoroughly proud of my team for showing what they're made of."

SURREY v LANCASHIRE

Surrey batted first and put together an impressive 391, W.Denny leading the way with 107. Other good contributions came from M.Phadke (66), D.Bravo (46), J.Arlott (38) and F.Pandit (37).
It could have been so much better at 335/5, but an inspired spell by K.Dean destroyed the tail. Y.Mongia finished with 29-7-81-3 while Dean had figures of 32-8-95-3.

The home side then took control of the match with a mammoth first innings score of 521. Youngster F.Yapp, acquired from Victoria during the off season, plundered 198 before playing a tired shot to be deprived of a well deserved double ton. Many of the other Lancashire batsmen also helped in amassing the giant total – M.Walker (78), S.Stanton (52), M.Aronstam (35), S.Munir (35) and N.Doru (31).
Best of the visiting bowlers were T.Petal (27-6-68-3), T.Best (30-7-84-3) and G.Wagg (27-5-97-3).
So Lancashire with a first innings lead of 130.

Surrey found the Lancashire bowling attack less charitable second time around as Y.Mongia knocked the top off the batting lineup to have the visitors reeling at 138/5. Surrey opener J.Arlott was doing his best to hold the innings together, but when he was brilliantly run out for 83 at 216/6, Lancashire paceman H.Fernando blasted out the tail. Surrey all out for 259, a meagre lead of 129 runs.
Y.Mongia with 14-2-40-4 and H.Fernando with 20-3-52-3 were the best of the home bowlers.

Youngster M.Aronstam (61no), again making the pre season critics eat their words, and captain S.Stanton (64no) then knocked off the necessary runs without loss to secure a 10 wicket win that saw Lancashire maintain their position at the top of the championship table.

Surrey – 391 and 259
Lancashire – 521 and 131/0

Somerset recorded its first loss in either form, and it was a depressing one for sure. I hate losing in 4D cricket:(

In a game we should have won on paper, Somerset played ok but were always a bit behind the eight ball. The problem was our first innings bowling; we conceded 464 runs.

Frankly, im ****ed offf....only positives to take out of the game were centuries by Pothas andd Youhana, and some good bowling by Collyer.

It was annoying how, aside from Youhana and Pothas, most batsman got starts but didn't go on with it. (ie Fry 66, Godwin 89, Donald 40 etc...)

Kent Record 1st Win

After disappointing start to the season for both Queensland and Kent, both clubs were looking to kick start their season with a solid victory. Even though Kent were playing at home Queensland went into the match as favourites, on the back of their ability to take heavy weights South Australia to the wire to record a draw, as well as their extra experience in the coaches' box.

Kent won the toss and decided to bowl, knowing that the best batting conditions on the bowler friendly Canterbury pitch was in the 2nd innings of the match. After a good 2nd wicket partnership between Marsden and Tikolo Queensland set themselves into a good position to set a healthy first innings total. Unfortunately for Queensland that was pretty much the only highlight of their innings with Queensland going from 1/74 to all out for 163. If it wasn’t for a gutsy 41 from middle order batsmen Yashpal, the situation could have been worse for Queensland. All Kent bowlers shared the wickets with Stratton (4/40) and Butt (3/32) being the main wicket takers. Kent keeper Singh also made himself noticed in the innings by taking 5 catches and 1 stumping, to give him 6 dismissals for the innings.

Kent got off to the worst start in reply with Salvi taking to early wickets of Christian and Jenkins, to leave Kent 2/9. Kent rallied their innings behind captain Muzumbar (41) and v/c Stratton (33), who put on an 80 run partnership. After the good work done by ‘Muzza’ and Stratton, Evans triggered a small middle order collapse that left Kent 5/126. Still needing 40 runs to get a first innings lead, Queensland were looking like they could get themselves back into the game. But no one told new recruit Richards (59) and recalled batsmen French (39), who came together to put on a 87 run partnership, to give Kent innings lead. The news got worse for Queensland as keeper Singh combined with spinners Butt (32) to push Kent score near 300. After Singh hard work to get Kent a sizeable lead he was left stranded on 49 by tailender Hawkins. Kent ended up with a score of 305 and a 1st innings lead of 143, which would have been worse if it wasn’t for the bowling of Evans and his 5/91.

Kent bowlers began were they finished of in the first innings by taking the early wickets of Marsden and Tikolo, to see Queensland struggling at 2/18. A resistant fifty from opener Zeegan (59) gave Queensland some hope of getting back into the innings. He joined Bundela (27) for a 74 run 3rd wicket partnership, which put Queensland in a decent position at 2/92. An inspired change by Kent captain Muzumbar brought back on Olney (3/52) who produced a quality spell to ripe through Queensland middle order for 3 wickets and take any thoughts out of a unlikely victory out of Queensland thoughts. Queensland wicket-keeper batsmen Michael Dighton and fast bowler Evans gave them something to bowl at with 65 run partnership with pushed Queensland score over 200. Stratton and Butt both rapped up the tail bowl Queensland out for 219, giving Kent a small target of 81 to win.

Kent openers Muzumbar and Christian put together a 55 run partnership to make short work of the target. Evans provided a road hump for Kent on their way to victory taking 3/8 off 3 overs, including 3 wickets off 4 balls. Many Queensland players believed that he had Stratton plumb in front on the hat trick ball, but the umpire didn’t see it the same way as Evans and his team mates. Evans ended the match with 8/99 and was easier the best performer in a losing side for Queensland. Richards eventually hit the winning runs for Kent, giving them a comfortable 6-wicket victory.

Scores:
Kent 305 and 4/81 def QLD 163 & 219

Managers MVP Points:
3. J Singh – 49*, 8 dismissals
2. R Sratton – 7/80, 33 & 0
1. D Richards – 59 & 19
