England Thread

England have gone for a few specialists in their Twenty20 World Cup squad:

Vikram Solanki
Owais Shah
Darren Maddy
Luke Wright
Kevin Pietersen
Ravi Bopara
Paul Collingwood (capt)
Andrew Flintoff
Matt Prior (wk)
Chris Schofield
Jeremy Snape
Chris Tremlett
Stuart Broad
Ryan Sidebottom
James Kirtley
Is it me or does the bowling look more than a bit dodgy?

Do you blokes ever like you're bowling squad?

I've been on this baord for about 5 months and what I have gathered is that since the 1980s, you guys have never been satisfied with your bowling squad.

Make do with what you got an move on.

Schofield's bowling worries me, he'll be up against batsmen who can handle him a whole lot better than most county cricketers.

I'm not a bloke thank you. :P

And anyway, why is Anderson not there, he's been one of our better one-day bowlers for a while and has become quite experienced? Actually, I know why, he doesn't have the best domestic 2020 record, but I think they could do with him in there.

The selectors have done what I thought they would do and go for a mixture of the 50 over regulars and 20/20 specialists - although the latter are mainly in batting and spin bowling. Surprised Solanki is in and I'd have given Nixon a last hurrah as IMO he is beter than Prior at 20/20 and when the competiton is in September this year his age is not an issue. The interesting thing will be if Schofield and "Mr moonball" Snape can do as well as in domestic 20/20 or will the better quality of player they will meet find them out? Still at least no Yardy - for which we should be eternally greatful....

Good squad generally. The only change I would have made would be to have Nixon in as keeper ahead of Prior. I am skeptical of Schofield, but I think giving him a shot is a fair decision.

We haven't had a truely world class bowler since Fred Trueman. Fred Trueman!!!

We've had a few very good bowlers, (Willis, Botham, Gough, Snow) and a couple of decent ones (Fraser, Caddick, Dilley, Old) but really even too few players at that level. It is embarrasing really when you think about it.

Its about right , I think that England needed the balance of Twenty20 "Specialists" and International players. For me the bowling attack looks pretty good. Flintoff with his bounce and death bowling , Tremlett with his uncomfortable bouch , especially on SA tracks , and Kirtley who is a great death bowler at county level.

As for Schofield. Im as skeptical as the next man. Id have much rather have Nayan Doshi in the side. But you can't win them all. Overall a very good squad.

The only two changes I'd have made.

Loye For Solanki
Doshi for Schofield

Aside from a couple of players its a decent outfit, probably won't do much but better for the likes of Maddy than selecting the likes of Cook, Bell et cetera.

Although, as Rob Key said its all well and good smashing military medium pacers in domestic 20/20 but doing it to Shaun Tait takes a different class of a cricketer.

Reckon Nixon should have been a cert, he's a great twenty20 bat, however the rest of the squad looks alright and i'm glad they're dropped Bell and Cook.

yea Loye should have definately been picked. I guess Schofield is being picked with the idea of giving the bowling attack some variety, but i doubt as i'm sure many would his ability to do well on the international stage, but then again i doubt he will play.

Plus come on surely Anderson should have been picked, yea he has shown in his ODI career not to be the greatest death bowler but i don't see what makes Sidebottom or Broad better options than him even @ 20/20 level.

Based on the squad the best XI, could be:

Maddy
Prior
KP
Freddie
Shah
Collingwood
Bopara
Wright
Snape
Tremlett
Kirtley

Too bad Trescothick wasn't mentally ready for a comeback, he would made this team look much stronger/

That's one thing, but another thing is cotinued talk about how crap you're bowlers are. It is quite pathetic. I'm not one to say 'support your bowlers,' but I'll say if you don't have it, stop complaining.

I don't see why Broad is getting scrutinised by some. It was his excellent Twenty20 record for Leics in 2006 that first got him noticed by the selectors.

Bopara ruled out, here's England's opportunity to bring Mustard in like he should have been in the first place.

But I'm sure they'll go for a like for like swap instead.
