Well you once claimed that you only watch cricket during the summer home season and that too only started a few years ago. There are people who will claim to watch a lot more cricket than you, and yet won't have the faintest clue about Bangladesh who are a test nation, forget about an Associate team like Ireland.

Ireland have played very well in all the World Cups including 2015. You're right, their win/loss ratio in the last WC is deceiving and had Pakistan not produce a uniquely Pakistan performance against West Indies, Ireland would have qualified. Most people won't say that though, not because they genuinely disagree, but because they are just unaware about these games involving lesser teams.

I always find myself having to 'remind' people all the time that 2015 Bangladesh was not a fluke or an anomaly by any means. They have been progressing in ODI cricket for a very long time now, having beaten New Zealand, West Indies in 2010, 2012, and also qualified for an Asia Cup final in 2012.

Ireland deserve test status. Not because I think they will be any good at it as of now but they should be at the level Bangladesh is now within the next 16 years.

ahhh well that's mainly due to timezones and not having sky/foxtel i suppose, i still follow results and stuff for overseas games. i've always followed world cups ever since '99 when I was a kid, back when I thought Scotland would end up reaching test level soon after they performed decently against us in the first round. Watching minnows perform and improve is one of my favourite things in cricket

But yeah, Ireland rule and it's a pity all the players who worked so hard to get them to this level are now on the other side of 30 and won't get to ever to taste much test cricket

You know I actually think Ireland will get to Bangladesh level much earlier. One of the reasons Bangladesh have been so behind at the test level is the lack of even a decent test seamer, which is why they never get 20 wickets. Ireland have had better seamers overall (one Mustafiz doesn't change that) and if given the opportunity, I think they can develop a decent seam attack in lesser time, as they get the exposure from English cricket. Not saying they would start beat big teams, but at least they would be a bit more competitive than Bangladesh were for the first 10 years of their test history.

I love the irish cricket team as much as the next guy but the reason why they haven't received the same investment is pretty clear. They just don't have the population to sustain any serious short to mid term growth or FC structure, while Bangladesh have a huge population and little competition in terms of other sports. The potential ceiling for Bangladesh is so, so much higher.

Ireland are a shot glass that's already damn near full. Bangladesh are an empty pint glass.

although i guess nz is already an overflowing tablespoon. ICC should really stop funding them because this is as good as they're ever going to get.

But the earnings per fan from the Irish will be higher than that in Bangladesh. Won't that help compensate for some part of it? And who knows it may not remain such a minority sport if the team is actually good at cricket.

In my previous work place I had a Kenyan colleague who lamented the very same thing about the Kenyan golden generation of 2003 WC.

Which is where Kenya were in 2003, and when the likes of Tikolo, Odumbe, and the Obuyas were the spines of the team. We hit a glass ceiling and the lack of exposure (we pretty much stopped qualifying for u19 World Cups) means that successive generations of teams have been weaker and weaker. I really hope Ireland are not on that path

Small point, but isn't the fact that they weren't qualifying for those tournaments an indicator that there wasn't the talent there anyway?

Oh right, so rather than it being a case that the players weren't very good and hence they did not qualify the next time round, it's actually the fact that the good players all couldn't be ****ed with having to qualify so gave up the sport.

Apologies for not noticing that when it was clearly obvious.

Come on Marc.. no need to be so condescending. The point is clear... A very talented associate team does not get the promotion when they are at their peak and hence future generations do not really think of a career in said sport. Its not difficult to understand.


Unless your point is that the Kenyan golden generation was a fluke and was never going to happen again...
