Women's football stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

Why, as a general rule, is goalkeeping in the women's game still abysmal? I get that they won't be as tall or have the athletic ability to jump/leap as far as a male keeper but that doesn't explain the general incompetence when it comes to positional play and ability to literally hold onto a ball. It really stands out as a sore thumb given how much outfield play has improved at the top tier, even compared to a decade ago.
Outfield play is entirely lower body affair, whereas goalkeeping also includes a lot of upper body, something women aren't known to be the most relatively proficient at.

I think it's a size thing too, it's far more noticeable the difference between a man and a woman stood in the middle of a goal......which further highlights the truly abysmal nature of last night's shoot out.

Euro 2025: England win on penalties - how dramatic and emotional shootout played out - BBC Sport
For anyone who wants to watch it again (and boy is it comedy value), here are all the penalties. It's worth noting how they all had such short straight run ups, meaning they could really only put the ball one way, so very easy for the keepers to guess. By the time Bronze stepped up (she should've gone earlier) I was hoping someone would just put their foot through it and finally she did. Kelly needs to give them lessons, easily the best (and not for the first time either).
As for the game, good fightback from gifting 2 early goals (could've been more), Carter is an absolute liability at the back. Really should beat Italy in the semis now, but hard to predict this lot.
Carter was actually pretty sloppy against Wales, but the match situation meant that it didn't matter, and obviously her performance in that game by-passed the typically hopeless commentators due to the scoreline. Shame, because she was pretty good in the world cup, but not now. Williamson isn't as solid as she was before her ACL injury, but she did OK yesterday. Let's hope her latest injury doesn't keep her out of action for long.

It was a good comeback, and there's no faulting the attitude of the team. I've not previously been a fan of Bronze, to the extent that we have been known to entertain ourselves playing 'Where's Lucy?' when Engand concede, but she was very good yesterday.

FOOTball.

Can't believe American has to explain this to some Brits.

Obviously your core and arms are stabilizing as you're running, you've got the odd header in there. But you literally can't use your hands or upper body strength to be manipulating the ball, unlike basketball or tennis, for instance.

Not sure if serious, but this is suggestive of significant misunderstandings/gaps in knowledge.

Nah, I know what I'm talking about and you lot can't groupthink gaslight me out of this take. Football players don't need upper body, to a large extent. Its okay to have strong shoulders and core, but there aren't a lot of huge upper body mass type guys in the game, for good reason. There's little benefit, and also a cost if you overdo it.

Compare the upper body physique of most soccer players (especially more skillful less barbaric non-English leagues) with those of sports that require more upper body activation like basketball and tennis. If Anthony Edwards could get ahold of Lamine Yamal with both arms, there's nothing the latter could do to keep from being swallowed whole.

Have you ever played a real football match before?

I don't know what you guys are talking about, I'm not saying to have an emaciated corpse of a chest and torso you carry around with you.

But look at pictures of some of the greats like Zidane, Neymar, etc. with their shirts off and tell me they ever trained upper body a day of their lives.

None of these people are women footballer, let alone more specifically women goalkeepers, which was the topic you were responding to originally.

And no one here is going to claim any footballer will match Antony Edwards, the 6'4" 225lb small forward basketball player, whose height alone would be freakish in football. That's very different to saying you don't need any upper body strength in football though.

The comparison is between women field players vs women goalkeepers with regards to men.

Relative disadvantage for women is more in upper body strength/power as compared to lower body. Goalkeepers require upper body more than field players. Thus, it only follows that women goalkeeper, being relatively more disadvantaged than women field players, would end up looking worse. (Conversely female strikers might look relatively better).
