Why was Malcolm Marshall so middling in ODIs?

nah i say we leave them as is and he's forever an allrounder with a batting average 5 above his bowling average, ie a better test allrounder than Kapil Dev

Tbf if he added 100 in each of his not out innings and was then dismissed he would still have been averaging 36.

Still, given the dross we've had over the last decade, imagine how much we would have appreciated him in today's era.

Can anyone honestly say Marshall would not make the West Indies ATG ODI XI....think not so hardly middling
Marshall may not quite make WI ATG ODI XI given the quality there historically, but it wouldn't look as out of place as Bevan making an ATG Australian test XI.

Nah, Marshall is a lock with Garner, Holding and Ambrose...an ATG WI ODI XI has to have 4 pacers

Surely stats are a huge factor when rating Marshall. Tbh when ive watched highlights from old world series matches the other WI quicks look more impressive to the naked eye than him

Again Marshall had 100 ODI's with average 23 if you want to use stats

This is just like the Botham bashing when people looking at his overall stats rather than considering how great he was for his first 10 years

And if different era stats meant anything, Greg Chappell had an economy of 4.05 in ODI's...must be one of the best allrounders ever

I mean Roberts, Holding, Garner and Ambrose all have better averages and ER than Marshall. In fact Ambrose is the one most likely that Marshall could replace... The other 3 are in the top 10 of all time for both categories

Holding, Garner and Ambrose are no brainers really. Ambrose's ER is unreal for the era he played.

I would go with the below order of merit considering all aspects like ER, average, longevity, era they played etc.

1.Garner
2.Ambrose
3.Holding
4.Roberts
5.Marshall/Bishop
7.Walsh

Either way, Marshall isn't too far down the order.

So Mr_Mister, you still need to prove why Bevan is a better fit in tests than Marshall in ODIs.

Robert's played only 56 ODI's, Garner 98 and Holding 102, so Marshall's record at 98 ODI's where he averaged 22.87 seems pretty relevant after all
