You think Viv was better than Sobers? I'd have Sobers ahead of Viv on batting alone, ignoring his bowling...

I think King Viv is the second greatest batsmen ever.Even if someone disagrees with,I think u got to have someone with Richards' batting style. You'll get lot of players with Sobers' batting style but hardly any with Richards'.

I really rate Viv, I have him in my team ahead of people like Sachin, Lara, Chappell, Everton Weekes, George Headley, etc etc... I'd have Sobers probably just ahead of him though, on the grounds of better consistency over the career. In terms of peak, there's no comparison, Viv's peak was second to none.

I just pick both to be honest, and say that while Sobers was by no means a great bowler, he's good enough to be a solid fifth bowling option in my team - with Marshall, Lillee, Imran and Warne, its not likely his services will be greatly required in normal circumstances...

Your team is a very good one & I think Sobers=Lara but chose Lara over Sobers because I've seen him playing in my lifetime.Another reason for leaving out Sobers was that my XIs have following structure:
5 Batsmen
An allrounder
Wicket Keeper
4 Specialist bowlers

So,couldn't find a way to fit Sobers in there even though love Sobers TheBatsman

State Vice-Captain
1. Jack Hobbs
2. Geoff Boycott
3. Don Bradman (Captain)
4. Sachin Tendulkar
5. Viv Richards
6. Garry Sobers
7. Ian Botham
8. Alan Knott (WK)
9. Shane Warne
10. Malcolm Marshall
11. D K Lillee

I must admit in the case of Boycott and Botham its a case of voting for personal favourites - though bear in mind GB would have scored a lot of FC runs on tough, uncovered English pitches. In the case of the WK, with that top seven you could safely pick the best 'keeper (although Knott could bat, just not like Gilchrist). Mind you as one of his Test centuaries was against "Lillian Thomson " in 1974-75 and another was in the 1976 "grovel" series you could argue that was a slightly higher standard of bowling than was the case in a lot of Gilchrist's innings. The two most recent additions were Sachin and Warne - the former for reliability and I don't need to say anyhting about Warne really.

Had a major re-think re my all time XI the other day.

It was:
Hobbs
Gavaskar
Bradman
Hammond
Richards
Sobers
Gilchrist
Warne
Marshall
Lillee
Ambrose

but I've decided to make a couple of changes and now say:
Hobbs
Hutton
Bradman
Hammond
Richards
Sobers
Gilchrist
Imran
Warne
Marshall
Lillee

For a long time I resisted having Imran in as I figured with that top 7, having an allrounder at 8 wasn't necessary, and that there were better seamers than Imran around. Decided that if the theory of an all-time XI is that they have to compete against the 2nd best all time XI, his batting might actually come in very handy after all, against a bowling attack probably featuring Ambrose, Murali, Wasim, Hadlee, etc. Also reexamined his record as a bowler and decided the difference between him and Ambrose was one I can live with - although I hate not having big bad Curtly in my team!

Hutton for Gavaskar is a change I've been contemplating for a while, and decided to go with during Oz_Fan's recent poll. I'll probably undo the change then redo then undo tbh. But for the moment, that's it...
Finally Trumper out :)

This was much harder than I thought it would be, apologies to Barnes, Hammond, Miller, Tendulkar and Spofforth, who I couldn't find a place for.

Hobbs
Gavaskar
Bradman
Headley
Richards
Sobers
Gilchrist
Imran
Warne
Marshall
Murali

1. Hobbs
2. Gavaskar
3. Bradman
4. Richards
5. Sobers
6. Gilchrest (wk)
7. Imran (C)
8. Hadlee
9. Warne
10. Marshall
11. Lillee

I think my bowling lineup at its peak can rip through any order. It was tough to leave out Tendulkar and Lara, but I simply consider Viv to be the 2nd greatest batsman ever, while Sobers to me is the game's most complete player. Therefore, I just couldn't make room for Tendy/Lara.

TBH there is only about seven spots for me that are certain. The top 3 Hobbs, Hutton and Bradman, the keeper Gilchirst, the all rounder Imran Khan (and captain), the spinners Murali and Warne. Then i could pick 10-20 players in the middle order and seamers spots. I don't think I could ever narrow down those four spots in my head. So my side would be:

Hobbs
Hutton
Bradman
Walcott
Weekes
Khan (c)
Gilchirst (k)
Akram
Warne
Murali
McGarth

With Sobers he would have to make the side as batsmen alone if anything. For me Imran Khan is far greater all rounder.

EDIT: I had a think about this and considering i've picked Hobbs and Hutton over Sunil on the back of their combination. The best way i can fill the other spots is by going the same as IMO there little between a lot of middle order batsmen and seamers.

For the middle order i went Weekes and Walcott, with Worrell those three made the best middle order combination ever IMO. There is no doubt there are probably better indiviual batsmen then those two, but when you add in the potential combination they ahead others for me.

The seamers i went McGarth and Wasim. McGarth gets in due to his combination with Warne. With Wasim Akram i went for him as Murali has always performed his best with a left armer from one end, as well as Wasim Akram potential combination with Imran Khan.

The above side may not have the best players possible in each position, but when you add in combinations i reckon they will beat most sides.

I finally worked out the rest of my all time side :)

He was never in my all-time XI. He's still in my alltime Australian team though...
Most of us probably have an all-time XI fairly firmly set in our minds - I was wondering, if anyone has changed theirs recently, and what prompted them too? Has anyone done something so outstanding in recent years that they've made it onto your list, and if so, at whose expense?

My eleven is:
Jack Hobbs
Sunil Gavaskar
Don Bradman
Viv Richards
Victor Trumper
Garry Sobers
Adam Gilchrist
Shane Warne
Wasim Akram
Malcolm Marshall
Dennis Lillee
:detective :p

Once in the Gavaskar camp, I recently found myself switching to the Hutton camp. For those with Gavaskar in their XI over Hutton, can you justify the choice?
