sunilz has been gagging for this post - it's probably the only reason he made the thread - so here we go

KOOKAFACTS

boult duke - 34 @ 26 (21 @ 23 in england)
boult kookaburra - 227 @ 27

anderson duke - 420 (blaze it) @ 23
anderson kookaburra - 160 @ 32

boult home - 164 @ 25
boult away - 102 @ 31

anderson home - 384 @ 23
anderson away - 208 @ 31

the main thing anderson has in his favour is pure quantity (which only 2 other nations can realistically hope to emulate because they're the only teams who invite each other and the west indies over for 4-5 game series) otherwise they're virtually identical bowlers. anderson also only plays one format since 2015 whereas boult plays almost every game he's fit for, and now anderson even gets dropped...sorry rested.

id throw a new duke to either and a new kookaburra to boult except if we're in australia. that ashes tour anderson had back in the day probably seperates the two, despite it being something he struggles to redo consistently. boult's been mostly rubbish in aus bar a few games.

however boult strolls into the english side because he's a left arm swing bowler. anderson sits on the bench for nz because he's useless with a kookaburra, the ball nz have to use 95% of the time. :)

Flem has picked the dumbest hill to die on

Bowlers bowl better with the ball and in conditions that they've grown up honing their skills for - yea no **** sherlock.

Talk to us when Boult produces anything close to the spells Jimmy did in the subcontinent recently. The man can literally make the ball bend to his bidding.

Yeah tbf Anderson has the 2011 ashes and recent subcontinent performances to his name. Had the ball swinging, seaming, and reversing on absolute roads for fun in India/SriLanka this year. Boult is very good but hes not Jimmy.

What about just watching them bowl and forming an objective opinion from that?
Anderson has more or less a perfect seam presentation, wonderful control of outswing/inswing, extremely accurate and constantly makes the batsman play. He just bowls in the channel (4th/5th stump) all day long. He's a much more refined bowler since 2010 (but especially since 2015/16 UAE tour) and that's what allows him to really succeed in even the most docile conditions

Boult has an excellent in-swinger, is somewhat accurate but can lose his radar at times. He probably generates more bounce and carry than Anderson and gets nice "zip" of the wicket in favourable conditions. Good bumper too and he can be hostile, but that is sporadic

Both wonderful, agile fielders. Would err towards Boult being the better overall fielder (only slightly). Can take spectacular catches and quite a few years younger than Jimmy so there's that advantage too

Boult was excellent in 2020 IPL. Give him a chance and I think he will do very good in sub continent. You are underestimating Boult.

one of trentys breakout series was the 2012 one in sri lanka where he and southee rekt a line up including dilshan, sanga and mahela.

i think he was pretty meh in india 2012 and 2016 but was very influential in the first test of our most recent uae series. southee the better subcontinental bowler of the duo tho.

people don't remember this stuff because the pommy comm box isn't ramming it down our throats every 5 minutes because they desperately want england to have produced a great bowler during my dads lifetime. unfortunately for you all i am here to ensure jimmy is correctly rated as a duke ball hero and an atvg.

Speaking favourably for Boult, When he's on he's really ON. I think his best is better than Anderson's best if you know what I mean. When he gets the wrist and seam presentation perfect, and when you factor in that late movement he gets - he's a phenomenal bowler capable of taking big hauls

Boult at his best has more going for him simply by virtue of being a leftie. All else equal you almost always prefer the left-handed player to the right handed one. It's not like he's swinging it further at a higher speed, and even if he is it's marginal. He's not as good at setting up batsmen and he's basically the same height too (inb4 thierry henry).

Boult isn't at his best as often and as consistently as Jimmy is. And this is before we even factor in longevity, which we should.

Just can't see any angle you can argue for Boult here unless you want to narrow this down too 'who is better at wrecking a batting lineup while at their absolute best', and even then Jimmy A has spells like this one:

Note how he's done that in Australia with a Kookaburra

Excellent last over from Boult. Is there a Trent Boult Fan thread or do I need to start one ?

Flem is not wrong though

"Anderson has had x good tour and y good tour to these places" is not a relevant point when they don't play the same amount. Of course if one guy plays 3 times as many Tests he's going to have more better tours. He's also going to have a lot more worse tours.

Biggest thing they have in common is neither are as good as their fans think they are.

Interesting stats by Flem. Guess it’s practically a draw based on that though I haven’t checked wpm

Boult in Sri Lanka (2nd test 2012)

Vs Sangakkara, Jayawardene, Samaweera, Dilshan, and Mathews (gun batting lineup - far better than the current Indian lineup)
21 overs, 4 for 42 and
17.5 overs, 3 for 33

Wagner the best
Southee, Anderson, Boult, Broad all pretty similar (Anderson perhaps slightly ahead due to longevity).

Boult also took 4-54 in the 1st innings on that notoriously green mamba with all that cloudy and overcast weather you get in
Abu Dhabi (1st test vs Pakistan, 2018).
