Two historic first ever victories by SC teams in these countries. Which was better?

India bounced back while facing several injuries while SL did a whitewash with a fairly ordinary team. The first is rightly hailed but nobody talks about the latter for some reason.

who doesn’t talk about the latter

it’s been praised as one of the best series wins ever since it happened. the India centric nature of cricinfo may not help

India's was a better series because the quality of play and ongoing story was more compelling. And the gabba test in isolation was probably the greater win considering the two XIs.

But as a series victory, SL's takes it. The first page of the CW thread for that tour was filled with people (rightly) saying SA would wipe the floor with them. The first time a subcontinent side had ever won in SA too.

i’m not sure but it was Karunaratne’s first series as a captain in some way. not sure if it was first ever or first away series or even one of the first but it sure was one of it which is why it was seen as a big shock then too

I dont think so. One test victory and a drawn series dont compare with the others.
Considering all Asian teams have been smashed in NZ for the past 8 or 9 years, how poor Bangladesh have always been, and the fact it was against the reigning WTC champions it was very impressive imo.

A draw series can never be compared with won one .

Ans is SL . No one gave them a chance . Whereas in BG Trophy India had 30% chance .

SL in SA = 1983 ODI WC
IND in Aus 2021 = 1996 ODI WC .

I consider drawn series in AUS in 03/04 a very good achievement. People now mock that bowling attack of Gillespie + Lee + Bichel + Macgill, but before that series Aus were considered huge favourites. IIRC someone had predicted that Aus 2nd XI will beat most of the regular international sides.

Definitely. I feel the same way about the drawn series in 2001/02 against a full strength Australian side.

Imagine you're playing Goldeneye with your 5 year old cousin, he doesn't really know how to play so you go take a break and let him keep killing you by himself for a while, then you come back and he's almost caught up with you so you play for a bit to even it up before dinner.

Then he goes and tells the family that he almost beat you at the game. That's what it's like when you kiwis try to claim you almost won that series
