West Indies Domestic Cricket 2016/17

I wanted to talk about the A team tour of Sri Lanka which has just started so I thought I would create a thread for all our domestic cricket. The 4 day season starts in November I believe so it's not far off now. Given how awful the senior team performance/management is, pretty much all I have to celebrate is the performance of young players so here's to a season of development and lots of players putting their hand up for selection like Joseph, Dowrich, Chase and Hope did last year.

The first test in the A tour of Sri Lanka started yesterday. SL A are on top with a lead of 72 with 2 wickets in hand. The WIndies A pacers Roach, Keon Joseph and Leveridge were all over the place and got smacked. Leveridge also got injured after 4 overs, which is not hugely surprising as he has never played an FC match and was given a spot after getting a few of the Indians out in the nets last season.

Vishal Singh got an excellent 96, continuing his solid performance over the last 2 years. He's a technically correct left hander who scores very slowly but gets runs pretty consistently nowadays. Shamar Brooks has also been pretty good over the last couple of years and scored 60 odd. He's a very stylish right hander.

Another interesting performance came from off-spinning all-rounder Rakeem Cornwall. His performances are demanding attention and maybe even senior selection. The problem is he is fat. Very very fat. He has lost a bit of weight but is still comically overweight for an international athlete.

So it's 1-1 after 2 A team tests. Sri Lanka thrashed us in the first one and we came back to win the second test by over 300 runs.

Vishal Singn scored 160 to go with is 96 in the lst test. Rakheem Cornwall took 6/90, his 4th five wicket haul in as many matches, 3 of them coming against high quality opposition from the subcontinent. They are both pretty much knocking down the door for test selection.

Jamar Hamilton also scored 99 and 50 not out (off 30 balls). He's a brilliant wicket keeper who has needed to improve his batting so it's nice to see him performing at A team level.

Dwayne Leverock, is that you?

Dwayne Leverock, is that you?
He has actually lost a huge amount of weight to get to that size. He was absolutely enormous before. Definitely bigger than Leverock even.

He is a very good, steady off-spinner though and can whack the ball about with the bat. All these hauls against International subcontinetal oppostiton are not to be underestimated.

So currently our 50 over competition is going on consisting of ten teams. And those are...Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad, Winwards, Leewards, ICC America's, CCC, Kent Spitfires and West Indies u19s.

They are in two groups with games being played in Barbados and Antigua. Thus far Leewards and Barbados have been the two strongest teams although Jamaica have picked up after an early defeat and Guyana remain a threat. The top two teams in both groups will qualify for the semi-finals.

Anyway Kent lost early to Leewards but then stormed back and beat Champions Trinidad and also beat Winwards. On the other hand the WI u19s had lost both their opening games. The loss against Winwards was tight but they were battard in their last game against Trinidad. Being bowled out for just 58 runs. So many feared for them when they faced Kent today who had won their previous two games pretty easily. The u19s had batted first and posted 154!!..so they were certain to lose right? Not quite!!..they only went and bowled out Kent for 127!!!...incredible stuff :D . The top scorer in this game was a young Trini batsman named Patrick who got 45 and he's only 16 years old. He got a 30 not out in a previous game too so hopefully he could be a gem for the future.

Kent had a strong enough team out too. That's an impressive result for any u19 intl team
Yeah it's a stunning result tbh. HERE is the scorecard and when you look at the ages of the players this was no u19s team packed with several 19 year olds who have a vast amount of first class experience.

Patrick= top scored with 45 and is only 16 years old with no first class experience
Brathwaite= 17 years old with no first class experience
Yadram= 17 years old and got 29 runs and three wickets..no first class experience
Stewert= 17 years old, no first class experience..was part of the world cup winning squad
Kallicharan= 17 years old, no first class experience...was part of the world cup winning squad
Athanaze= 18 years old, no first class experience
Paul= 18 year old, was part of the world cup winning team, no first class experience
Bishop= 16 years old, got a 4fer with his spin, no first class experience
Louis= 16 years old, got 1/28 in this match, no first class experience
Alleyne= 17 years old, no first class experience
Mccoy= 20 years old, the only over aged player, was part of the world cup winning squad

So EIGHT out of the eleven who won the game were seventeen or under  . Really is heartening to see young talent like this coming up. Kallicharan has been spoken about for a few years because he broke Brian Lara's schoolboy record and Stewert has been playing for Grenada since he was 15 and is very highly rated. But this Patrick kid looks like he's gonna be someone to keep an eye on, same with Yadram and Bishop. Louis is a leggy who has caught the eye too.

So our 4 day competition resumed today, Maybe it's just because our ODI batting was so unbelievably tame but I really enjoyed following some of the batting today, there was some good FC batsmanship on display. Notable performances were:

Chadwick Walton 103 vs Guyana (3rd 100 in 4 innings)
Yanic Cariah 96 not out vs Windward Islands (rescue job from 50/5)
Stephen Katwaroo 58 v Windward Islands (same as above)
Shimron Hetmeyer 50 not out v Jamaica (Love watching this guy bat. He's such a talent. I really hope he doesn't get himself out as usual).
Keen Joseph 7/53 (this after a good A tour to SL, he must be knocking on the door for test selection)
Kyle Mayers 3/23 (good medium paced swing bowler, never gets much recognition)

7 wickets for Veerasammy Permaul, helped guyana to chase a paltry 56.

Shimron Hetmyer with an unbeaten 44*

Guyana is one of the best FC teams in the Caribbean.

Really exciting round of matched in the PCL this week. Lot's of fantastic individual performances:

Sunil Ambris: 235 against Leeward Islands scored at nearly a run a ball. Hopefully this could be his breakthrough innings as he's definitely a talent.

Shai Hope: 215 not out. HE really is dominating FC cricket nowadays, this is his second FC double. He just needs to translate that into scores at the international level.

Kraigg Braithwaite: 144. Brought up 7,000 runs in FC cricket and he's only 24.

Kacey Carty: 103. Maiden FC ton for one of our stars of the Under 19 World Cup. He's a touch player whose struggled with the transition to FC cricket but his last 2 or 3 knocks have been excellent so hopefully this is the start of great things.

Miguel Cummins, Shane Shillingford and Nikita Miller all took 5 wicket hauls too.

After a while, I am happy that batsmen are making double centuries again. And what a match that was between Guyana and Barbados
