Week 22: Roland Garros Qualifying

Roland Garros II - Men's Singles Qualifying
Grand Slam - Friday (Qualifying Competition) - Paris, France - Clay (Red)

  • Pierre Rose was the first CWLander into the main draw after a straight sets win over Sweden's Linus Petrus. The on-fire Rose, who has been awaiting this moment for quite some time, played comfortably his best tennis of the week after being taken to three by Max Eisenhauer and Alex Rojas. Petrus was also coming off a three-set affair earlier in the week, but couldn't match it with Rose who played sensible tennis for the most part as he showed his game is growing on the red clay. He cut down on errors and managed to outplay Petrus as the doubles specialist showed he still has work to do physically as Rose overpowered him with a 6-4, 6-4 win.

  • No such luck for third seed Randy Banks who, having dropped just ten games in his first two matches, blew five match points in a nervous affair with Radaslaw Marzec of Poland. Marzec dropped the first set and was again trailing regularly in the last as Banks failed to take advantage of his numerous opportunities. With just his first match point, the Pole secured victory 4-6, 6-2, 9-7 in the most tense match of the day.

  • A second set catastrophe wasn't enough to stop Marcuss Deane charging into his first Grand Slam main draw with a win over 28th seeded Chilean Renato Varas. Despite taking the first set, Deane was on the receiving end of a smashing by Varas who claimed the second set 6-1 with Deane managing just eight points. But after the humiliating turn of events, Deane hit back and began to make inroads against Varas' serve as he clinched a composed 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 win.

  • Jason Lawley completed a fine week of qualifying with a hard fought win over local wildcard Eric David. David had taken his first two wins in three sets this week, but Lawley denied him that chance in an iffy performance which was saved by some strong willpower in tiebreak tennis. Taking the first 7-4, Lawley took the second 12-10 as he finally converted his fifth match point to advance to the main draw 7-6(4), 7-6(10).

  • Phoenix Wleft also advanced with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win over eleventh seed Oleg Puder.

  • There was also a main draw berth for David Briggs who continued a monumental week for the East with a straight sets upset of American Brian Miller. In a tough match, Briggs produced his best tennis late in sets to steal the match from underneath the American in a confident 7-6(5), 6-4 win to make his first Grand Slam draw.

  • Finally, Ishan Narang made it a sweet six for CWLand as the 21st seeded Easterner took out Italy's Orazio Rizzo in three sets. Despite throwing away a 5-2 second set lead, Narang never gave in and reaped the rewards as he claimed the third and final set 6-0. With his game dogged by his typical inconsistencies, it was a positive sign that Narang managed to fight off the adversity and secure a massive victory with his top notch serving and a baseline game that is growing in confidence. He even managed to secure the match with a serve-and-volley in the ultimate show of where his game is at right now.
