Spark seems to have taken up the fight here. Me? I just hope he's sending PG text messages

Got into a bit of a hairy situation a few years ago but has been steady as a hard rock for Australia since taking over. It takes balls to take over a tense dressing room like that. Good hard bloke that loves a bat. Hard.

International Captain
in a fair world, encouraging a young teammate to deliberately alter the state of the cricket ball to gain unfair advantage against the rules of the game would be considered a bigger cricketing crime than sending a dick picture to an adult outside of the game.

but, of course, we don't live in a fair world.

therefore Steve Smith gets to captain a test team again and Tim Paine is probably doing what he does best outside of cricket.

**** world!

I don't hate him anywhere near as much as Spikey. He was very (very) lucky to be picked in the first place in 2017, but he at least outwardly the PR job he did with the Australian public was absolutely vital to stabilising the image of the game which was in deep freefall in mid-2019. His batting was adequate for a Test #7 in the modern era and a reasonable keeper (until that India series).

But he's the principal reason we didn't win in England in 2019 and one of the bigger reasons we lost to India B in 2020, he failed to consistently maximise the output of what is, on paper, one of the strongest attacks in Australian history, and in the end he failed at his single most important job when given the captaincy, the one that got him the gig in the first place: not being a dickhead on the field.

of course everyone would believe that too.
but can't u see the injustice here?
Steve Smith did not encourage Bancroft and Warner to tamper with the ball. In fact he didn't do anything at all, that was the problem.

I'm reluctant to just buy the CA narrative which absolves Smith of actual malice given i) the evidence we have for that is highly self-serving and ii) the same narrative also places zero blame on the bowling unit and iii) I think there's close to zero chance the bowling unit was not in on the action considering how obsessive bowlers are about the ball.

I'm glad to leave it at the position that we don't really know the extent of Smith's involvement.

I'm mostly going off Geoff Lemon's work here. I agree with the bowling unit thing but there isn't really evidence that Smith was directly involved in Warner and Bancroft's plan. That doesn't absolve him of responsibility as all; as captain it was his responsibility to keep them in line as a leader. But that's a far cry from actually doing it himself.

I will say in Tim Paine's defence that he was bloody unlucky to basically fall off the face of the earth at a national level all the way back in 2010 when he had done nothing but impress at the international level. In another world he plays 50 Tests on merit and Nathan Lyon has a stack more wickets in his career as he has a then-competent keeper to bowl to rather than late-career Haddin and Matthew Wade.

Bit to unpack here

Which has nothing to with Steve Smith, but even if it did and/or you're talking about Warner then Warner was permanently-banned from captaincy so nothing you've said here really has a leg to stand on
I for one don't believe cheating in a game of sport is a bigger crime than ***ual harassment
and nothing Paine did was ***ual harassment, borderline adultery maybe

Yeah it's not at all established that it was consensual. The complainant says it wasn't, Cricket Tas says it was, but frankly Cricket Tas has a record in these matters and it isn't a good one.

the reason why the incident became a thing is because the person literally complained that picture was not welcome and has ultimately filed a ***ual harassment claim

the best that can be said is that an CTas investigation said that Paine didn't do anything wrong. for me, there's not really any reason to believe a CTas HR investigation between tassie's second favourite son and someone was on the way out of the place can be treated with any real relevance. HR isn't there to pursue truth no matter the cost to the organisation that it's a part of.

now of course, we know enough about how these things go to know that the person won't ever a win a case on ***ual harassment. but equally, the PR position of Australia captain clearly can't have someone who has been accused of the action he was accused, and where pictures existed. he wasn't sacked for having a naughty* profile pic on tinder. And he wasn't dropped from the team for it, but clearly couldn't justify a place without the C. But hey, we discussed this at length in the first Paine thread

*please read this in Steve Smith's voice.
