Compulsory listening for any cricket fan these. Got through Pietersen's, McCullum's & half of Ponting's so far.

Howie asks Ponting when he first realised he was better than the other kids. After hesitating for a bit, Ponting finally said it was probably when he played in this series of aged-group carnival tournaments as an 11 year old, & made 4 hundreds in 5 innings in the under 13s & the next week 2 hundreds in the under 16s.

Punter also mentioned that they brought in a batting retirement rule in Tasmanian junior cricket after he went 2 years without being dismissed.

Interestingly, Pietersen gave his 2 best opposition batsmen as Ponting and Kallis, & Mohammad Asif as the toughest bowler he faced by a distance.

I haven't listened to them yet, but for non-AFL fans, the two best of them would be Jack Jones (ex WW2 veteran) and Jake Edwards (never played a game but since become a big mental health advocate). A mate of mine produces the podcast, reckons they were the two best episodes.

This thread being about neither Howe or Howsie has left me bitterly disappointed.
Yeah, I thought it was going to be about non-ND players competing for Howsie's affection, with the losers being shunted into a 'are you kidding me, Plyaer X' style thread and forced to live against their will in Hamilton until they become international class.

Surprised to hear he rates Asif as the toughest by "a country mile" when he's faced McWarne, Murali, Steyn, Philander, Herath, UAE Chuckmal, Ashwin, Johnson when he had the stache.

Great thread btw. Wasn't aware of this podcast. Looking forward to hearing the other interviews and the Sanga one coming next week.

Pietersen had the measure of Warne and McGrath to a degree (averaged 53 in 10 Tests), belted Murali in England, beltred Steyn and the entire South African attack in 2008 and at Headingley in 2012, belted Herath in 2011 and 2012, rightly doesn't regard Ajmal as a bowler, belted Ashwin in 2012 and belted Johnson in 2010.

Whereas he struggled in the 2010 Pakistan series quite badly and IIRC Asif also played the 2005 series where England were brought back down to earth with a bump.

Howie sounds like an Aussie version of Jimmy Stewart.

But interesting listening so far - taken in the Baz IV and the Dennis Cometti chat.

Yeah, he was asked about Johnson after he named Asif, & still maintained the latter by miles.

Can also recommend the Brad Hodge one. Greg Norman was interesting, but wasn't quite the same with them doing it by phone.

Norman's a great interview subject - in spite of the fact he's enveloped with himself, he's very open about his failures over his time as a professional golfer. It makes listening to him far more interesting that you'd probably get from most professional sportsmen.

Listened to the Sammy episode.. Great guy but Loled hard at 'all we want from the board is a large retainer and being permitted to play in three t20 leagues'

Have listened to most of these now and they make for interesting enough listening. I always enjoy listening to Greg Norman and of the cricketers probably Sangakkara's was confronting, such a smart, funny guy. Punters was good too

Dean Jones' interview was interesting for the perspective on the dressing room culture during his playing days.
