Test Trophies League Table

So every time two Test nations play a series they play for a trophy. If there's a draw, the trophy gets retained. Obviously some trophies mean more than others - I challenge you to find the name of the Sri Lanka v West Indies trophy without looking it up - but it's still a measure of how many live matches have you been winning lately, and that's still considered the business end of things. Plus Adders' post in the England v SA thread got me thinking about how rare it would be for England to hold all the trophies at once - which if you missed it - they will if they win against SL and Pakistan at home this summer.

A table of which trophies have been won by each nation:

Resulting in our current league table.

England 7
Australia 7
Pakistan 7
South Africa 6
India 6
New Zealand 5
Sri Lanka 4
West Indies 2
Bangladesh 1
Zimbabwe 0

~

Australia are unsurprisingly a side to have held the grand slam nine trophies at once. First in 2004-5, after they finally beat India in 2004 but before they lost the Ashes the next year, and then again from 2007-8 between getting the Ashes back and losing to India in 2008.

SA did it most recently when they beat Australia in Australia in 2012. They lost it when they lost to them at home at the start of 2014. In 2008 they nearly made it but lacked a trophy against Sri Lanka before they were beaten at home by Australia again. They also had 8 in the early 2000s, only missing a trophy against guess which side.

The best I can find for England is 8, when after they beat India in 2011 they had every trophy except one, due to drawing with SA rather than beating them in 2009-10.

India got to no.1 with 8 trophies too in 2009, also missing one against the South Africans, and missing their shot twice with 1-1 draws home and away in that time.

The last South Africa-Pakistan series was a 1-1 in 2013

Same goes for Pakistan-West Indies (1-1 in 2011) and Pakistan-Zimbabwe (1-1 in 2013).

India-Bangladesh should also be 0-0 based on the 2015 one-off test.

A drawn series means the trophy gets retained, so doesn't count for this.

Same goes for England v NZ, England v WI and Pakistan v NZ. The dates given are the last time someone won.

WI only held six Test trophies at the same time (NZ Aus Pak Ind Eng SA) because they basically couldn't be bothered playing Sri Lanka

You know this is actually pretty cool.

Do it for ODIs too IMO.
Everyone pretty much accepts that ODI series a level below the World Cup, which is why I took a while to get around to this. Not worth nowt, mind.

Australia 8
England 6
South Africa 5
New Zealand 5
Pakistan 5
Bangladesh 5
India 4
Sri Lanka 4
West Indies 3
Zimbabwe 0

To think we could have ended the 'second best ODI team thread' then and there

NZ with the only win over Australia (and decent chance of doing it again) and losses to WI and Bangladesh

FML.

What rubber did we drop against New Zealand in 2014/15? It's been a while since we played bilateral ODI's together (before this series)....

South Africa 6
New Zealand 6
Sri Lanka 4 + World T20
England 4
Pakistan 3
Australia 3
India 3
Bangladesh 2
Zimbabwe 0

Not really what I expected. South Africa with a chance to go top if they beat England this month. Big 3 could help themselves out by giving someone else a game.

Test update

Bit of a kicker for England missing their shot at an unprecedented for them Grand Slam at the Oval. They won't get to play Pakistan again for a few years and in the mean time it'll be tough to hold on to trophies away to India and Australia.

Table:

England 8
Pakistan 7
Australia 6
South Africa 6
India 6
New Zealand 5
Sri Lanka 4
West Indies 2
Bangladesh 1
Zimbabwe 0

India look set for a charge up the table given that two of the trophies they hold were won away from home (vs WI and SL). No one else has more than two trophies that were won away. They can take back all the trophies they're missing against NZ, England and Australia in 2016-17.

It's heartbreaking that it's nearing a decade of no tests between India Pakistan. Right now would be a good time as any to have one, to determine the best Asian team. Genuinely hard to predict the result, though I suspect India would lose or at the very least fail to win on flatter decks because of our inferior bowling.
