Simple concept. Pick your XI for particular situations. This is the team of players you'd most back to achieve the given goal. Please use players that you've actually witnessed first hand.

Now keep in mind that the team must be a typical XI. That is, it can't be packed with 11 batsmen or 11 bowlers. It must follow the general rules of team constitution.

To start...

1st CHALLENGE: Team Built For <<Survival>>
GOAL: Bat for 2 days on a seaming wicket against McGrath, Gillespie, Walsh and Ambrose. The target is inconsequential. Survival is the key.

Mike Atherton
Gary Kirsten
Nasser Hussain
Rahul Dravid
Graham Thorpe
Shivnarine Chanderpaul
Andy Flower (wk)
Shaun Pollock
Daniel Vettori
Ian Bradshaw
Matthew Hoggard

I can't think of who to replace him with off the top of my head, but given the bowlers include Walsh, Ambrose and McGrath I wouldn't have one of their favourite victims Atherton there.

Atherton has no chance against those bowlers. Have you seen how many times he was dismissed for low scores when confronted by Ambrose and McGrath? Replace him with Richardson and Kallis should be in there somewhere.

Atherton fair enough, but who would you take out for Kallis?

why pick bowlers at all if the objective is to survive/bat for 2 days...? :)

can't you pack your xi with 11 batsmen? :)

personally id have martin crowe and even though i didnt get the chance to watch too much of this player, andrew jones(surprise surprise). other common names include jimmy adams and mark taylor, both of whom were the finest exponents of padding absolutely everything and blocking full tosses.
and if you are looking for a bowler who can frustrate bowlers with his batting try ian salisbury. i will never forget his 28 from 162 balls( and 20 sometin of 100 balls in the next inning) in india in 93.

Situation - really flat track

Hayden
Tresco
Vaughan
Kallis
Lara
Gilchrist
Flintoff
Pollock
Warne
Murali
Mcgrath

Not much time to think about it but its basically a side you might like to have if the pitch was very flat, all good strokemakers, likely to score at a high rate. And a bowling attack full of patience and 2 spinners

Because it's a match situation... and because I stated it in my initial post.

That's about the only good thing he did for England though wasn't it?! (Salisbury)
id say his performances with the bat were more promising than his performances with the ball. scored a 50 in his 2nd test against pakistan, and also managed to score a crucial 36 in the game where ambrose demolished england for 46. seemed to like batting against pakistan though, averaged 42 in his final series against them!!

But unfortunately he averaged 193 with the ball!

In fact his last 5 series drew 9 matches with 5 wickets at 145.4!
