Stokes is an average bowler

Stokes is an average bowler who just bowls quick sometimes and his line wayward too especially for Tests.Everyone knows how bad his bowling was during that final and doesn't seem to take enough wickets.I rate his bowling and I think he should transform into a specialist batsmen like Smith and he might achieve some records like that because his bowling could be a big hindrance in future given his injury record as well

he's played too many tests already to ever have a record anywhere near Smith lol

but I do agree on his day he looks like an amazing bat

His batting has certainly superseded his bowling. I'd call him a ''batting all-rounder'' at this stage, whereas earlier on you could argue he was the outright 50/50 Botham-esque all-rounder.

Before his batting improved he was nearly a no rounder

He is an average bowler. For a bloke who can smash a double ton that's a pretty decent state of affairs.

One of those players whose selling point is what they can do rather than what they typically do. You can afford one of those.

He was probably England's best bowler in the tests in Bangladesh and India. And honestly he doesn't need to be much more than an average bowler anyway to be a great allrounder overall.

An 'average' bowler? You do know what average means right? An average bowler combined with an average batsmen makes for a great all-rounder.

He is wayward at times and certainly isn't a death bowler, but 2.4 wickets a test is very good for an all-rounder, and he's obviously skilled as a swing and reverse swing bowler, and he often gets important wickets.

You'd have to be stupid to think he should give up bowling now.

Ideal 4th seamer for a side with an opening attack with 800+ wickets between them.
Perhaps we wouldn't be discussing it if Broad hadn't been below par this summer. As it is, we need a bit more from our 3rd and 4th seamers. Maybe a factor next time we're discussing whether Moeen should bat at 5 in Australia with Woakes and TRJ both playing to maintain pressure after Jimmy and Broad's spells.

Eh, I don't think it works well rhetorically when you're slamming someone though. Especially when you're wrong.

maybe we're from different parts of the world

i would definitely describe something i'm slamming as 'soooo average' sometimes

Stokes is best when it reverses. His bowling is worse in the limited overs for that reason. He does need to tidy up those economies. That said he is capable of some match winning performances - one man Bothamesque devastating spells. Last season for instance against Surrey, Surrey requiring 110 or so runs to win with five wickets in hand, Stokes pulled off a match winning spell of 4/54. Good wickets also: Roy, Foakes, Curran, Batty. Probably the best spell I've seen from Stokes.

Can one of you stats NERDS tell me what the average runs for a wicket is in the history of test cricket?

Also, pondering the relative pros and cons of Ben Stokes has just made me think about battrick for the first time in nearly a decade; he'd have high Bs but low Cs.

Good job Stokes is only average, if a better bowler was bowling today West Indies would have suffered a heavier defeat.
