M'thinks you're extracting the Michael, by George.

And that's the worst thing I've ever said.

Trott is so good that I added him into "your favourite sportsman" field in my facebook profile :D

So Trott is ECB's men's player of the year.

Deserved TBF.

I'm just dissapointed that Lydia Greenway won ahead of Stuard Broad however.Broad has had a decent year.

I can't believe no-one's ever made a "Stuart Broad is a woman" joke before. It's so funny and original.

Interesting article on Trott by Stephen Brenkley in today's Independent.

After 31 test innings, of all English test batsmen, only Herbert Sutcliffe had more runs.

He's also seventh on the all-time list behind Bradman, Hussey, Sutcliffe, Headley, Arthur Morris & Doug Walters.

Doug Walters. WAFG.

With all due respect to Trott, he's probably the most workman-like of those you've listed there Brumbers.

I think that's probably true, with Herb & maybe Hussey being the only possible exceptions.

Sutcliffe never quite gets the props his career figures should merit and I've always supposed this was because of the "how" rather than "how many" consideration.

am surprised that harvey and strauss are not in that list. remember strauss and his incredible numbers at the end of the 04 series against south africa. and harvey started with a bang, didn't he?

Maybe it's because he was supposedly over-shadowed by his opening partner. As you say, his stats are astonishingly good.

Strauss was averaging 60 after his first 10 Tests but then didn't score against Bangladesh or the first few Ashes Tests in 05, so his average dropped to 51 after 31 innings.

Harvey had a tremendous start to his career but here is a victim of the specific number of innings chosen. He averaged 69 after 24 innings and 65 after 41 innings, but he had a shaky series against the West Indies in between so after 31 innings his average dipped to 56.5.

that's what i supsected, howzat, ie the exact number of innings chosen being the determining factor.

here is a hardehar sobering fact....sobers was averaging in the early 60s till the last couple of years (and the last 20 or so innings....might be off on this but u get the point)!

gavaskar had 20 100s after 50 tests. think he was averaging 60 at that point!

would be interesting to have a thread or discussion about those who started off in monumental fashion but did and didn't live up to the early numbers.....and the who woulda thunk it aspect of it as well.

Trott is a superb player.

Is technically correct and his concentration is absolutely fantastic, nothing looks like troubling him on the field. I quite enjoy watching him bat tbh, I like players that play very straight and Trott's drives are very elegant. I've never seen him throw his wicket away either in test cricket.

On bouncier tracks, Trott could become a bit frustrated as his back foot shots aren't his strength and I've actually seen him dismissed from playing the hook/pull shot a few times.

In summary, Trott is definitely a player who could average over 50 at the end of his career.

Whatever it takes!!!
I'll give Kallis a bit of credit for stepping up his game in that India series in SA this year. But that doesnt change some horrible over-defensive batting for the other 15 years of his career.
agree...there was a series of his when he played the Windies and Lara said that was the best piece of sustained batting excellence he has seen over a series.. But apart from those days, he has been pretty ridiculously slow as a test batsman, esp. for his talent.

Had a lot to do with the quality of the rest of the batsmen and the role he was supposed to play. Seems to have upped his game since the emergence AB & Amla.
