I'm not sure Smith is even better than Gary Kirsten. They have the same adjusted away averages and Smith averages 34 at home to competitive attacks. Kirsten does have a nice bit of padding down the order though.

Gilchrist was amazing but would he be competitive against Root/Kohli at no4? I can't see it.

While we all agree Sachin is better than Hayden it's not completely out of the realm of possibility that some people rate Lara and even Smith over Sachin. I don't but it's not that far fetched. Same way people rate Hadlee over Marshall; it's not that far fetched.

Root and Kohli ???!!!??
Point 1: Root is placed 5th (!) in that list.

Point 2: Gilchrist and Graeme Smith are definitely much better. 7-8 are probably better.
Root is an amazing test batsman. Very hard to seperate him with Kallis or Sangakkara. I would put Root higher than Dravid because Dravid didn't do well vs good attacks in Aus and SA. Root has done well in SA. Kallis also good accumulator but Root is an attacking all conditions batsman.

Graeme Smith is at same level as Hayden for me. Outside top 10. Great captain but a little overrated as batsman. Gilchrist would be probably #11, hard to compare a keeper batsman with specialist batsman.

Nowhere near close to outlandish to think Smith>Sachin. Perfectly reasonable given how good Smith actually has been. Totally depends on whether you choose Smith for the highest peak ever bar Bradman to go with being far and away the best in the most competitive age or choose way higher longevity of Sachin.

Steve Smith has scored bucketload of runs in Ashes over multiple test series like Ashes 2017 and Ashes 2019 and those were some high pressure knocks which turned the momentum of the game towards Australia. He was also leading run scorer in Ashes 2015 although that series, he cashed heavily on flat pitches. But Smith in Ashes 2017 and 2019 was at another level altogether.

Smith also dominated in India in 2017 by hitting three hundreds. He has won a test series in NZ, Pak, SA, WI as well and has a WTC Final test hundred to his name in the only World Test Final he appeared.
