Road to the 2019 Ashes

Watching Aus vs SL warm up game and thinking the following WC players are locks for first Ashes test

Warner
Khawaja
Smith
Cummins
Starc
Lyon

Roughies

Maxwell
Stoinis
Stoinis should not be anywhere near the test team, Maxwell an outside chance to make the squad as the final batting option.
The others are going to play the first test, Starc a slim chance of not being selected.

If Maxwell has a successful WC I could see him make the ashes squad. Langer has said on the past runs in all formats will be considered for test selection

PLayers should not be selected for test matches on the basis of only fake cricket runs but if a player has a FC record which shows their long form cricket quality then runs in fake cricket might be a good sign a player is in good form. So Maxwell making runs in the World Cup might help support his case as he has a good first class record compared to others he might be fighting with for a place in the squad. However someone like Stoinis has quite a poor FC record so he could score well at the World Cup but that it would not in anyway mean he should be selected.

Problem is that Maxwell never has a chance to improve his FC record as always playing white ball cricket for Australia

It's hardly like his red ball record is poor either. It's not a massive sample size admittedly but he does average over 40....

But averaging over 40 in first class cricket is about as useful of an indicator of quality as reading tea leaves. You basically only need one hundred every ten innings to get an average over 40 and you only need to do it against attacks which have bowlers that make Holland look impressive. It's the equivalent of saying that a video game console is good because, get this, you can play video games on it *shock horror*.

A batsman who doesn't average 40 at first class level does not belong anywhere near a modern test side. Unless that test side happens to be Ireland or Afghanistan and you've never played first class cricket outside South Africa A vs Australia A games.

Travis Head and Marcus Harris average 38 and 37 in FC lol

That all makes sense but Australia has very few batsmen with a F/C average above 40. From memory it is Smith, Warner, Pucovski, Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Patterson, Burns, Wade and Maxwell.

My boy Labuschagne! The highest wicket taker as well as the top scorer for his team (so far).

I am genuinely surprised in how well he has fared with the ball in county cricket. Been bowling with reasonably good economy, surprising as he has always had a bit of a tendency to bowl the odd long hop. Obviously he is working pretty heavily on his bowling, seems to be paying off

You only have to roll the ball out of the back of your hand to cause the Poms problems. They play wrist spin in Braille.

Labuschagne with 182 gives him 527 runs @ 74.75 to go with his 9 wkts @ 34.33

Siddle took 3-29 and 1-17 to now have 14 wkts @ 20.14 to go with his 85.00 batting average

If Labuschagne plays ahead of Patterson, I'm gonna be so pissed off.

Yet they can't bowl it to save themselves (with the red ball at least). Hear people talk Mason Crane up and frankly he is truly dreadful

You should hate Crane Burgey, if not for him bowling continuous pies in that tour game, Jason Sangha would have probably not got his ton against England
