Ricky Ponting is by far the most beloved cricketer in CC. He is considered here just marginally below the tier of Sachin & Lara in spite of the fact that Ponting was way below mediocre against turning ball and just above mediocre when it comes to facing leather movement...

Ponting did well against Murali though, so below mediocre is a stretch.

Still averages below his career average in Sri Lanka...and that 26 in India after 14 tests and 25 innings looks horrendus...I mean anyone in that league (where Ponting is in CC) doesn't have anything as horrendus as that in their CV...

Your statement was that Ponting was poor against the turning ball, but the truth is that Ponting was just uniquely bad in India, for which he should be docked points but not as a poor player of spin.

He was terrific away against Pakistan and was probably even more assured batting against Murali than Tendulkar was.

Even in India, he had two horror series and a couple of bad tests but two relatively good series towards the end of his career, but by then the damage to his record was unsalvageable.

How do you figure that, considering Tendulkar averaged a full 20 points more than Ponting in Sri Lanka? Can't imagine Murali missed many if any of those Tests.
Actually, Tendulkar did just make hay in tests in SL without Murali. 4 tests, 607 runs @ 121. Ponting could’ve done so in 2011 but by then he could barely hold a bat. Both have similar averages in matches against him in SL.

Bit of both there. Clearly was a better batsman when he stopped keeping. Probably partly his improvement as a player but not having to keep and being able to focus time and energy on batting definitely helps

I think taking the gloves off coincided with his peak batting years tbf. Makes sense age-wise.
Maybe but keeping in tests is a demnding task and most keepers average significantly more when they are not keeping than when they are keeping.

His averages jumps from 40 as a keeper to 67 when not keeping. And it can't be simply be due to hitting his peak because even played a significnt part of his career as a non keeper post his peak.

Yeah if he never kept at all his career average would be higher but it wouldn't be 67. It was a combination of both.

It would be 60 which would be better than any of hhis contemparies.

But him being a good keeper and an ATG bat means he is a way greater cricketer than Sachin, Ponting, Lara and others imo.
