Richie Richardson played 74 of his 224 ODIs in Australia (only 48 in the West Indies)

Has anyone else with a substantial career (in either tests or ODIs) played a bigger chunk of matches in an opposition country rather than their own?

a lot of modern day Pakistani cricketers will have barely played in Pakistan

A lot of Associate cricketers won't have much ODI/T20I cricket in their home nations. I'm guessing a lot of their cricket will be played in places like Malaysia, Oman, Thailand, UAE

Whatever it takes!!!
If Richie was in that list, then its likely some of his other Windies contemporaries could be there as well, especially ones who did not play beyond the 1996 World Cup.

I had a look, Carl Hooper played 50 here and Lara 52, Walsh 43 but that's about it. It seems like during the 80s and 90s the Windies came out for here for ODI series a crazy amount of times. after 96/97 it was just 00/01 then 05 though so things slowed down

Mostly because they stopped being good at ODIs in the late 90s and tests when Ambrose retired in 2000.

Most ODI cricketers will end up playing more tests overseas than at home unless a home world cup falls during their career.

Malcolm Marshall played 64 of his 136 ODI matches in Australia. His second most frequently played country is his home, WI, where he played only 18 matches !

Englishman
He fails on the "substantial career" qualifier in international terms, but Martin Donnelly played all 7 of his tests in England over 2 tours separated by 12 years and a world war.

Probably noteworthy that he only played 13 of his 131 first class games in NZ too. & played rugby union for England.

yeah but being played in one particular country more than their own seems pretty odd right?

a bit more rare than just 'player x played 20 away matches and only 10 at home' - its the fact Richardson played so many in Australia

RR's ODI career was 1983-1996. WI would've played shorter bilateral series at home but in terms of going to Oz played in
the World Series Cup (triseries) in 83/84, 84-85, 86-87, 88-89, 91-92, 92-93, 95-96, and 96-97 (would've played in a few final series too). There was also the 1991/92 (co-hosted with NZ), 1985 World Championship of Cricket in Melbourne (some highlights on NZ Sky Sport last month during the lockdown), and a 4-team tournament in Perth during the America's Cup yachting in 1986/7. Richardson must have got to know Australia very well.

Not a very long career, but back in the 1880s Billy Bates played all his 15 Tests in Australia.

yeah it's crazy isn't it. They came out here for 8 summers between 84-96. It'd weird to remember that they were the legit main attraction of cricket for a while, probably even ashes series took a backseat to WI-Aus series in the 80s? maybe?

Definitely. The Ashes weren't as big of a thing when Australia was smashing a mediocre England regularly while the West Indies were the kings. Even into the 90s the West Indies were the main draw cards whenever they were here.

Viv 73/187 out here too, and only 33 at home.

Gus Logie 61/158, 30 at home

Larry Gomes 39/83 here, 16 at home

and lastly Joel Garner, 54/98 here, only 19 at home

now one from another country(but still related to Australia)

Neil Fairbrother played 21 of his 75 ODIs here in Australia and only 20 at home.

Funnily enough he averaged 40 in England but that shot up to 51 in Australia

An average of 29 from 24 matches in Asia is what dragged this guy's record down
