Really Bad Umpires!

Bijed

International Regular
Of the current lot, Dharmasena is probably the worst, generally a bit dodgy and had a nightmare series when England toured Bangladesh last year. That said, I'm not particularly sure what any of the English umpires as obviously they don't stand in England tests and I tend not to really notice who the umpires are in tests I follow as a neutral. Though of course Nigel Llong had that moment which made him Public Enemy No. 1 in New Zealand and Richard Illingworth (in the same series?) came to my attention for wrongly calling that no-ball that Adam Voges got out to 0n 7 before going on to make 239. No idea what those two are like outside of those incidents, however.

Over all time, there's a pretty sizeable list

Shakoor Rana, famous for the Mike Gatting incident, must be one of the most shamelessly biased umpires ever. To quote Cricket Country:

Pakistani umpire Shakoor Rana’s affair with controversy was long, lasting and often passionate.

In 1978, when India resumed cricketing ties with Pakistan after a 17 year hiatus, Rana, the officiating umpire, warned Mohinder Amarnath for running on to the danger area during his follow through. An incensed Sunil Gavaskar, the vice-captain of the side, walked up to Rana and openly charged him with allowing Imran Khan and Sarfraz Nawaz to overstep while bowling at the Indian batsmen. The issue was resolved diplomatically – not exactly to Gavaskar’s liking – given the high profile political implications of the tour. It was the first of Rana’s many major brushes with the touring cricketers.

In December 1984, during a Test match at Karachi, the normally cheerful New Zealand captain Jeremy Coney threatened to take his side off the field after an appeal against Javed Miandad had been turned down by the same umpire.

Speaking from the commentary box years later, Ravi Shastri recalled his first tour of Pakistan in 1982-83. “Imran and Sarfraz would make the ball swing, and then there were those two umpires, Khizer Hayat and Shakoor Rana. It was like playing a four-pronged pace attack.”

Currently Dharmasena is the worst by far. Kettleborough, Erasmus and Illingworth are my favourites, in loosely that order.

Who is that prat with the arm guard thing?

There was this Australian umpire in the Indian tour of West Indies in 1997who didn't give any lbws no matter how plumb. Later, in life he was sent to jail for some crime against women. There was another West Indian umpire in that series who also never gave any lbws. It was frustrating. Neither were biased towards either team, just plain bad.

IMO he was alright for a lot of his career, but should have retired a few years earlier.
Myth imo. He had plenty of shockers all throughout his career... It's just that people associate him with Sydney 08 so much that everything before gets overshadowed.

You may be thinking of Steve Randall? His offences weren't against women.

His cricket and professional careers ended when he was convicted in August 1999 of 15 separate counts of ***ual assault against nine schoolgirls of ages 10-12 while teaching at a Catholic primary school between 1981 and 1982.[2][3][4] He was sentenced to four years jail with a two-year minimum, and was released on parole in May 2002.[2]

Wow, terrible stuff.

Whatever it takes!!!
Bucknor, Bowden etc were umpires who were good when they first came in and stayed good for few years before becoming shockingly bad and getting worse for a very long time. Did not help that both bought into their own hype as well and started behaving like prima donnas when no one gave a **** about their antics.

Randall. **** has given me out lbw after smashing it, failed to give massive edges caught behind and is just hopeless in general. He had to go off the field one year when it got over 35C (he's not even that old).

Great bloke but shocking umpire
