Rank South Africa's 5 famous pace bowling all-rounders from the 90s

mr_mister

Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
McMillan, Cronje, Kallis, Pollock and Klusener.

Obviously Pollock is the best bowler(with Cronje the worst) and Kallis the best bat.

So as overall contributors to the team, including their batting and bowling ability together(and perhaps fielding if you feel so inclined) rank these 5 in two lists, 1 as ODI all-rounders and 1 as test all-rounders.

edit- oh and rank them beyond their 90s exploits

Not going to bother with ranking them in anything other than the only proper form of cricket, test cricket.

1. Kallis
2. Pollock

big gap

3. McMillian
4. Klusener
5. Cronje

Kallis/Pollock

Huge gap to McMillan

Daylight to Klusener

Cronje at bottom as he is a filthy dirty cheat who doesn't deserve to be remembered for anything but that.

Not arsed about sorting them out for anything but tests.

I wasn't around for much of their careers but Kallis and Pollock look like they were the same combo but in reverse. Kallis was ATG bat + solid bowler. Pollock was the reverse. In test cricket, at least. In ODIs all rounders can fulfill so many different roles.

That is why I have them together on my list. Both amazing at their main job and class at the other one too. Can't split them but both were so good.

Hard to compare their secondary disciplines, but I think kallis was specialist quality and pollock wasn't. There were several superior bowlers from pollocks time. Not so for kallis as a bat. Kallis wins bonus points on longevity

Lara, Tendulkar and Ponting better than Kallis.

Only McGrath, Ambrose and maybe Donald better than Pollock. Waqar's peak was before Pollock came along.

Greater across career, as opposed to greater during pollock's career : Mcgrath, ambrose, donald, waqar, wasim, steyn, Murali, warne all clearly ahead (if only slightly for some).

Tendulkar only clearly ahead as a bat, although several are comparable.

Why was tendukar Ponting and Lara better bars than kallis? 55 average batting in one of the hardest countries scoring 13000 runs with the longevity of nearly 20 years whilst also having to bat along with bowling 15+ overs each innings.

You don't think Pollock was "specialist quality"? (whatever that is)

Pollock would not make a national team as a specialist bat unless they were minnows. Kallis would make a number of teams as a specialist bowler- probably good enough for the average team as a 3rd or 4th seamer.

That's entirely speculative and unfair though. Pollock was probably good enough to bat 7 and who knows how good he may have been if he focused solely on batting. Who knows, really.
