Ponting: Amongst the Top 5 Fielders?

G.I.Joe

International Coach
If my life was on a player hitting the stumps on a throw in the heat of a match, I'd go Ponting over Clarke.

Clarke is obviously a brilliant fielder, but I reckon Ponting is better.
yeah. Clarke prefers the ball on the bounce in all aspects of his cricket, Ricky would get you home every time with the direct throw.

Clarke's not accurate at all, have given up on the amount of times he misses. He has a very appealing throwing action to the eye and chucks it like a rocket but rarely hits. Not in the same league as Ponting or Symonds.

Even Clive Lloyd in his pomp.

Ponting falls off the coupon somewhere near the bottom.

It is all perception, cricinfo describe his runouts from square of the wicket as searing, others say he is not accurate at all, I watch him play and think he is one fine fielder and very accurate, not as good as Ponting but still a fine fielder with an accurate throw.

Stunning, that certainly put me in my place.

Incidently isn't there supposed to be a moderator deleting pointless posts that contain nothing but meaingless insults?

Lately, yes, he's missing by 10cm, a foot again. And again. And again. Gives me no end of frustration because in the first two or three years of his career he was freakishly accurate.

Yesterday he had a go at the non strikers end off Ross Taylor, which missed the stumps by so much (atleast 1 metre) that the backing up fielder at mid on had no chance to reach that and went for 4 overthrows.

Clarke is more accurate than Ponting but Ponting is the better fielder. Ponting will take the spectacular catch more often and is a bit quicker on the ground but Clarke has a more accurate throw.
Seems like Australia is not agreeing with you. :|

Good for you, here have one on me.:wine:.
Cut the crap, Streetwise. If you're not going to post anything constructive, don't post at all.

Yes, but if you report the post we're going to see it a lot faster.

Not in the last year. Can't remember the last direct hit Clarke got which actually got someone out since the 2007/8 season. While Ponting has hit, what, twice a series?

Clarke could be an outstanding fielder - he's still a very, very good groundfieldsman and a decent slipper (does seem to go a bit late for the ball) but he needs to A. fix his occasional lapses in concentration leading to silly drops (a problem not restricted to fielding unfortunately) and B. get his eye back.

AB was a good fielder too (the real AB, not the pretty boy Saffie).

Great arm (former baseballer), fine catcher and made the short midwicket spot a specialist one in ODIs.

Not as speccie as some others mentioned here, but that was never his way really. Just got the job done.
