Oulton comes good as Mash overhaul NSW

Young Mashonaland batsman Quentin Oulton today repaid the faith shown in him by Mashonaland management with a fine allround performance as Mashonaland secured their second consecutive one day victory.

Playing on their home ground, Mashonaland manager Andy Cameron had predicted that his spinners, Ben Joshi and Saqlain Mushtaq, would be the key to a victory against NSW. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat without hesitation, but before the score had reached double figures, NSW opener Cook ended up stranded half way down the pitch after turning blindly for a second run. Griffith and Martin both stroked their way to brisk fifties, putting on over a hundred together while taking a special liking to the bowling of Ian Bradshaw, whose 10 overs went for 79. It was the spinner Joshi who made the breakthrough, dismissing both Griffith and Martin in the same over, leaving NSW at 3/127. Kallis fell soon after to Bradshaw, but Quayle (54) combined well with Sodhi (24) to ensure NSW were in a good position for the last ten overs, and keeper-batsman Geraint Jones ensured this position wasn't wasted as he biffed his way to 47 off 35 before holing out off Oulton, which gave the young part-time spinner his first WCC wicket. The rest of the batsmen failed to add much more to the score, and at the end of the 50 overs, NSW had set Mashonaland a very competitive total of 9/284.

Ian Bradshaw copped considerable stick as NSW posted 284

The opening partnership, something which Mashonaland have historically struggled with, ensured that the home team were always in with a good chance, with Kade Harvey and Quentin Oulton adding 83 together at better than a run a ball until spinner Cole had Harvey stumped for 43. First drop James Beasley lasted only two balls, and was out plumb to Cole in the same over. Oulton continued on, however, this time with Roll, who posted his own half century in the partnership, albeit at a slower rate than Oulton. It was Oulton who fell first, going for 88 off only 89 balls after being caught in front by one from Roll that seamed back in. At 3/162, however, Mashonaland were in a good position, and number 5 Ben Straw and Roll added 89 together, only for Roll to top edge one to third man on 64, with 30 odd runs left on the board. Travis and Straw carried on, though, and thanks to some clean hitting from Straw, especially off Bloom (0/71), Mashonaland managed to chase down the total in the 49th over, to the obvious pleasure of their home crowd.

The Mashonaland home crowd were as boisterous as ever

After the game, Mashonaland manager Andy Cameron was clearly pleased with his teams' performance.

"I had said that my spinners were going to be the key, but it ended up being the batsmen who won this game for us. Our batting has been our weakness so far, and so it was good to see them perform well. Oulton showed what he can do if he applies himself, while Roll and Straw both kept their heads well and made sure we never fell behind the run rate."

NSW 9/284
Martin 58 (50), Griffith 58 (55), Quayle 54 (78)
Harvey 2/48 (9), Joshi 2/54 (10), Tudor 1/19 (6)

Mashonaland 4/287
Oulton 88 (89), Straw 67* (70), Roll 64 (80)
Cole 3/62 (10), Roll 1/27 (10)

Comets happy despite loss

ACT Manager Simon Fitzsimmons has surprising praised his team despite the loss to Sri Lankan outfit Colts this week. The team showed a lot of heart in the field and put in a very good bowling display. The pitch played very slow with meant runs were hard to come by but wickets were equally rare. Misbah Ul Haq made 82* and Alex Louden continued his good OD form making 43. Marshall bowled brilliantly in taking two wickets but that was most of the joy the Comets had.

A Six Wicket win to colts.

WP clinch last ball thriller

Western Province's tie with Tasmania was settled with the final ball of the match, as Tate scrambled a single to take the South Africans home.

WP were chasing 289 after a strong Tasmanian batting performance posted their highest total of the season. They lost wickets regularly but were boosted by a number of solid contributions. Kevin Bulman got them off to a rocketing start, as he smashed 43 off 28 balls. Chandrasekh looked to have set out to bat through, but his innings was culminated on 40 by a yorker from White. WP's bowlers were able to take a couple more wickets before the middle order were able to get in, and Tasmania were in trouble at 169-6. This was where Shiv Kotak moved up a gear. Not a big hitter of the ball, he nudged, swept and sprinted his way to 86 off 78 balls, and received handy help from tailenders Dhamika and Rice. Tasmania were bowled out for 288 off the last ball of the innings with White the pick of the WP bowlers, taking 3-25.

With the target a reasonably large one, WP's openers made a good start, sharing a partnership of 84. But Tasmania wrested the advantage from them as Rice and Dhamika grabbed three quick wickets between them to leave WP 95-3. White played an important anchoring role after his good bowling, scoring 42 which set things up for Ardley and Naqvi to finished it off. Ardley and Naqvi all but got WP to the finish line, but both fell late on leaving Hawkins and Tate needing 7 off Dhamika's last over. This came down to a single off the last ball, with Tate on strike. Tate squirted the full ball onto the off side and while Suresh Raina's diving stop stopped it from reach the boundary, his shy at the stumps was merely inches away from tieing the match.

South Australia Back In Contention
Hundreds Scare Tamil Nadu

Yarvinder Singh and Khan Rangnekar thoroughly batted Tamil Nadu out of the match at Adelaide, with remarkably easy hundreds forming parts of a stunning 238-run partnership for the second wicket. Despite Yarvinder occasionally playing cautiously, seeing out a number of maidens, he still completed a fine 115, while Rangnekar was brutal to end with 121. Ben Allen set the innings off to a fine start, making 17 before suffering a dodgy lbw decision, but the umpire quickly balanced that out as a number of decent calls were turned down in the mammoth Yarvinder-Rangnekar stand.

With 282 runs to defend, South Australia sought to tie down Karnataka. It nearly worked - Jadhav was brutal, making 113, but with Mooney and Axelby bowling excellently at first change, Jadhav's late charge was rather pointless. Eddie Graham chipped in with another couple of wickets, while Madurasinghe continued with five nagging overs after a useful 10 not out.

South Australia 281 for 3 (50 overs)
K Rangnekar 121
YA Singh 115*
B Guy 2-53 [10]
Tamil Nadu 256 for 4 (50 overs)
D Jadhav 113
E Graham 2-43 [10]
I Mooney 1-30 [8]

WP 2nds In Get Out of Jail Job

After being 9/170, Western Province looked down the barrel of a loss against their Tasmanian counterparts. However, an amazing 10th wicket partnership of 102 got the total up to an amazing 9/272, with number 11 Ryan Hewetson making a glorious 62, and was still undefeated after 61 balls at the crease. In support was the experienced Tony Ballard, who notched up 40 runs at just under run a ball pace.

It was a much needed rescue mission, after the WP top order threw their wickets away with loose shots early. Trying to take the attack to the bowlers, all the top 6 scored at a good clip but got only starts. The Tasmanian attack stuck to its guns, the highlight being Green who maintained his line and length consistently, and due to the amount of risks he forced WP to take off him, ended up with three valuable poles.

The Tasmanian innings was quite the reflection of Western Province's, as the top order got some good starts, but a steady stream of wickets and the lack of someone to go on with it left Tasmania at 7/129. An 8th wicket partnership of 92 wasn't enough, as WP ran out relatively comfortable winners, but solely due to an amazing partnership that not even the most optimistic WP supporter could have expected.
