Can see NZ coming 3rd in this by a distance tbh, especially if our selectors keep giving the likes of Rance, Kitchen, Blundell, Williamson game time, while ignoring the likes of Chapman, Seifer/Phillips & Ferguson.

Also Guptill needs a talking to about his approach up top, especially when chasing big scores. He's lacking the ruthlessness required in T20s. He hit a nice boundary yesterday, and then the next ball got a perfect medium pace ball to deposit straight down the ground for 4 or 6 , but instead he just pushed it to mid-off because presumably he'd scored a 4 off the previous ball. McCullum often talks about this,,, when you've just hit a bowler for 4 or 6, the old school mentality is to get a single off the next ball, but the best approach is to keep going, while the bowler is under pressure.

Why on earth does this need to take more than two weeks
New Zealand have a 10 day break between games at one stage . . .

absolutely absurd, it could be done in a week and then Australia would have been able to field a full strength side

this is the least important tri series ever made
At least it's more interesting than just playing a random 2 or 3 T20s at the end of a tour that no one will ever remember or care about

Black Caps Twenty20 squad for Australia: Kane Williamson (captain), Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Tom Bruce, Ross Taylor, Anaru Kitchen, Tom Blundell, Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Seth Rance, Ben Wheeler, Trent Boult, Ish Sodhi.

 Too late for them to change now, NZ have to role out the same squad to save face.. Sort of hope we get shown up to force changes.

NZ's best bet must be to hope the SCG is slow and turns and then serve up similar pitches at home, so that Sodhi and Santner can keep the opposition to low scores. Southee can bowl his offspinners too .

As discussed in the other thread, we're not making big scores on flat pitches unless the openers go nuts.

tbf i've kinda just noticed devcich was top run scorer and second highest wicket taker in the super smash and he's never looked up to much in the step up.

selectors are totally just picking blokes they think will be good. rance is good with the new ball tbf and has some sharpness now but better suited to 8 overs of ODIs straight up rather than hit and giggle. kitchen likewise is so much better at one dayers than this stuff.

edit - absolutely ridiculous we're not using this fluff to blood youngsters like chapman or seifert tho, but then NZC probably view this tri-series as our most important task this summer because they are corporate scum

I remember he got what I thought was quite a good 50 opening away against Pakistan in an ODI ... and then was pretty much never sighted for NZ again.

But surely better we at least pick a veteran who’s performing very well domestically than someone like Kitchen.

Seriously, wtf is up with that squad. I know the selectors are trying to create an environment where new players don't feel like they'll be permanently punished for 1 or 2 failures, but sometimes as a selector you've just got to flush the dunny and move on.

Kitchen is awful. Blundell is fine as a back-up option for tests, but clearly doesn't have the power game needed to complement the t20 side. And yeah, as a few have mentioned this would be the perfect series to give the likes of Phillips, Seifert and Chapman a go. Yugh.

I guess our XI would be

Guptill, Munro, Williamson, Taylor, Bruce, de Grandhomme, Blundell, Santner, Southee, Boult, Sodhi/Rance

If they drop Kitchen their selection goes down as a failure, so they stubbornly give him more and more opportunities to justify his place. They've done it a number of times now, Ronchi being the most obvious.
