Mills was a good bowler but Henry has a significantly better average and strike rate. Mills (admittedly through no fault of his own) never produced a match winning spell in a WC knockout match. Mills has a lot more wickets but that’s more a product of ODI’s becoming an increasingly endangered format (Henry’s only played 15 since the 2019 World Cup - he’s played 11 tests in the same period, despite spending most of that time well down the pecking order).

Mills did put in a fair number of good performances against the stronger sides of his era, South Africa and Australia (leaving aside the odd-20+ run death over). The Champions Trophy 2006 in India was a particular highlight.

It was a shame he always got injured for World Cups when he was at his peak.

Henry now has 119 @25. Where does he rank in the NZ all time ODI list? Obviously behind Bond, Boult and Hadlee. Maybe Chatfield and Vettori nudge him out as well. Hard to think of too many others.

Gary Troup had an outstanding record, and particularly did well in the World Series in the early 80's. Not sure how he only played 22 games. @thierry henry may be able to confirm but I think Troup was one of the tallest to play for NZ too.

The exciting thing is that Shipley has traditionally been much better in red ball cricket. It shows too, he's definitely bowled a Test length. Would be a big improvement on Tickner IMO.

I love the Ship so much. You're absolutely right, bowls a Test length and hits it from a good height. Nibbles it, and has a much, MUCH better radar and pitch map than Tickner. And is a vastly better batsman. No brainer, really.

I feel like this is a very significant knock for Will Young. If he gets us home, the boost of confidence he gets and the public reminder how good this guy is, could really be a big springboard to better things.

Yes young starts so well vs Ind A in NZ few years back but GS not give him enough Chances to show-Case his talent.

Still feel Young is NZ's best bet as the number 4 going into the World Cup, we'll get more out of Mitchell/Latham/Phillips at no 5/6.

I don't think it's fair to analyse Mills' career in terms of World Cups. He played in an era where ODI cricket was king, and there were a number of significant series' - VB Series, Champions Trophy etc. Had an outstanding record in Asia, and actually bowled better away from home. I think Henry has to play a bit longer to get ahead of him, but based on his great 2019 World Cup, better average etc, he's very likely to retire higher on the rung.

I'd love that to be the case, but one of Conway Allen Williamson Young Latham Phillips Mitchell probably can't fit, unless you think Mitchell/Phillips are worth 10 overs between them. In the sub continent, maybe....?

Yeah, good point. Young definitely can't play in our best XI given Phillips is undroppable, Latham is our keeper, Mitchell is the player of the year, Macewell is ODI player of the year and Santner is a bolted on starter.

I still feel like this is a hugely vital knock in terms of Young's confidence and the groundswell of public/media opinion about how good he is.

Correct, Latham is the w/k so will play every game if fit, Mitchell and Phillips are probably ahead of Young at this point (and there's arguably more upside to playing both of them, though Phillips was very disappointing in India I thought). Unless he hits a real purple patch with the bat in Pakistan Young probably gets in as reserve bat.

Having analysed all that, we have an opportunity to play a very stacked batting line up with Macewell, Santner, even Phillips doing some bowling in the sub-continent. 3 seamers (Henry, Southee and we all seem to think Boult will be there) and eight genuine batting options above them. Hell, you could even leave out Southee and play an extra batsman on a bunsen burner, as unlikely as that is.

Fantastic bowling all around from Kumara, Young should really look to see off his return spell. Bowled with plenty of heat and deserves a packed slip cordon.
