Fair knock so far from Erwee. Still don’t think he’s a long term option, but might be worth sticking with short-term.

I was just looking up statsguru to see what's the highest opening partnership by a visiting team in the first innings of a test match in NZ.
Adrian Griffith and Sherwin Campbell's 276 stands tall.
remember going to the first day in Seddon park 20+ years ago and a wicket didn't fall until just before stumps.
remarkably NZ turned it around and actually won the test with ease!
Chris Cairns from memory had a huge game.

Excellent work from SA. It was a bold move to bat first and they've made the most of it.

Heck there are foot marks appearing already on the pitch. It must be a dry pitch and no wonder South Africa elected to bat and went with a spinner.

I think we've misread this pitch but still a long way to go in this test match.

Flat pitch but what else should be expected, this is its second go round.

NZ attack starting to look like it did vs Banga's at Mt Maunganui, when you have not much pace to work with then prodigious seam movement and swing are your only chance to take wickets. If you don't have those you are toast. Plus Jamo has struggled to take wickets all summer.

He's back!

There's definitely no exaggerated movement off the pitch and bounce off steady barring one or two balls every other over.

Well we can bat South Africa out of it turns out to be flat and not a turning deck later in the test match.

We do have a very long batting line up as long as Keshav doesn't do what he did to us last time around.

Still very surprised to see footmarks starting to appear. Hope there's some rain around.

Tim getting it through at 125 kph on average*. I feel a bit sorry for him when the pitch is like this, must be hard slog.

*In before everyone: Vernon Philander would regularly pick up wickets bowling at this pace.

I think this might be the sun's position in the sky in addition to the camera angle...we're not seeing any of it from the end that Jamieson is bowling from.

On TV on close up it looks like grass is disappearing at the crease.

Definitely looks like 3 dry patches in the follow through at Kyle's end.

Good ball but Elgar was a bit lazy getting forward there. Hopefully get the next wicket sooner than later.
