Well....It's Australia(10-0) vs India(9-1) in the finals. Appropriately, the two best teams have made it.

An assessment:

Batting: Hayden, Gilchrist, Ponting, Martyn(?), Bevan, Symonds, Lehmann.....vs Tendulkar, Sehwag, Ganguly, Dravid(?), Kaif, Yuvraj, Mongia.....hmmmm...looks more or less even. The Indian top and middle order have been more consistent while the Aussie lower order have produced inspired performances to bail out their team in a couple of tight situations.

Bowling: Again these two have been the best bowling sides in the competition although Aus enjoy a clear edge in this department. McGrath, Lee, Bichel, Lehmann, Hogg vs Srinath, Zaheer, Nehra and Harb.

Fielding: The Australians are definitely much, much better at this although the Indians have improved a lot.

Competitive spirit: Both teams rate pretty high in this department. The Aussies have come back from the dead on a couple of occasions and produced adrenalin-pumping victories while the Indians after a bad loss against the Aussies have never really looked down the barrel so far.

All in all, if both teams play to potential, should be a high-quality, enjoyable encounter with the Aussies having an edge going in.

....and at last my 1000th post!!!

Congrats, Anil! :)

This is probably the biggest match India has played in the past 20 years and the biggest some of the current players will ever play in their careers :)

I just hope the 20 year "wait" won't end up in nothing:

In fact, I think India has gone far enough to please me. I won't be disappointed if we lose the finals, but I will sure as hell be happier if we win :P

Saturday night, I pay a visit to some good relatives of mine to watch this game :duh: OH BOY!! :D

The Aussie bowling department and the Indian bowling aren't too far away on current form with the Aussies having a slight edge with Lee's pace and form as well.

But in my opinion what makes the Aussie bowling look a tad more potent specially when playing India, is the vulnerability of the Indian batsman when trying to play their shots against that nagging offstump line or the rising delivery. But one heartening thing is that the the Indian batsman have coped well in this tournament and the Indian top order looks in better shape then the Aussie top order.

And on top of it all, the match is being played in Wanderers which is the fastest wicket in all of SA.

It should be a fascinating match.

The one thing I think England cantake out of this is that we only lost 2 games, one of them mightily closely, but the teams we lost to are now contesting the final.

Looking at it that way, we didn't have THAT bad a WC!

Which is what puts the Aussies as favourites for me. At Port Elizabeth, it would be different.

That, and Gilchrist and Hayden are both due, and they've got five specialist bowlers.

I think India want the World Cup more than Australia do. It's sort of like the Lakers/Kings....

I guess that's a valid statement.

Aus have got 2, Ind have only 1. Aus got the last one, so a majority of the players on the current team have experienced what it's like to win a world cup, but none of the Indians on this team have never even been to the final... :wow:

Two other factors which may assist India:

1/Australia have gotten into a habbit of winning and winning comfortably. India on the other hand have had to work hard for their wins which have become rather plentiful as a result. As such, I think India will approach the final in a better way.
2/Thirst for something called REVENGE!!!!!!

A loss by 9 wickets is a big margin...

Well the aussies have had a couple of close games too, and they've come through good, but I tend to agree with you...revenge may play a part :P

Well I dont agree with any of that revenge crap India will want it sure they will want to prove to Australia they are not just another international team that they can dominate.

However it's going to have no impact on Australia what so ever and realisticly it's not going to make Australia play worse and If India need revenge to get them up for a world cup final then they realy must be hard to motivate.

Also an interesting stat about the batting of the two teams

Australia's top six avrage 42.76 with the bat as a collective avrage compaired to India 41.21 but Australia's botom five avrage 27 to India 14.

Well, for me experience will be the telling factor in this final.

India have no players that have played a Final, they have played big matches, but a World Cup final is a very very different proposition. Against a team that thrives in pressure and big match tension. Still, India have a lot of match experience, I expect Tendulkar to be unfazed by all off it, as with Mcgrath, but Kaif, Yuvraj, Mongia, Zaheer, Nehra and Sehwag, thats more than half of the Indian team who are likely to feel the pressure.

As always, who ever handles the nerves will pull through

Well Gotchya what about Australia's inexperience?

Symonds, Harvey, Brett Lee, Andy Bichel, Brad Hogg, also have never ever played in a World Cup Final.

Thats half of their team as well. I agree with you though that who ever handles it well succeed.

It should be a cracker!

It's an honest assessment - England's WC was not that bad, and to be honest, I think that had they made the SS, then they would've made the semis at least.

I'd go more 80-20 I'm afraid. India have played well, but Australia are still Australia!
I would have gone 90-10(or even 95-5) for their next meeting immediately after the thrashing they received in the group match. Since then, however, both teams have played 8 matches and both have won all 8. On the way, India have had several confidence-boosting victories against tough opposition and are not likely to fold up like that anymore. That's why I upped India's odds to 40% which I think is a fair jump in that it acknowledges both the significant improvements that India have achieved along with the clear edge that the Aussies go in with.
