too much of a sensible idea rooted in long term thinking for NZC. what, do you actually want the ANZ micdonalds super smash Black Caps to have reasonable red ball cricketers?
Don't worry, Cribb's free market will sort us out eventually. The day will come when Indian consumers will tell NZC 'nah look, you promise us these languid and stylish Stephen Flemings and creative Baz McCullums in the marketing, but actually your latest products smell a bit malnourished and diseased'. Even the Chennai consumers will turn their noses up.

Of course, the Greg Barclays and David Whites will have probably moved out of NZC admin by then, leaving some other poor saps to excavate a hillside of rotting tree stumps.

India v New Zealand: NZ pacer Trent Boult gives full marks to teenage batsman Prithvi Shaw | cricket | Hindustan Times

New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult praised 17-year-old batsman Prithvi Shaw on Tuesday after he scored 66 and played a key role in the 30-run win for the Indian Board President’s XI in a one-day warm-up game here.

Prithvi was pulled out of the India U-19 team, which is due to travel to Malaysia for the Asia Cup, and was asked to open for the Indian Board President’s XI against the Kiwis. The Mumbai youngster raised a 147-run stand with Test opener KL Rahul.

“I heard he was 17, I couldn’t quite believe it. He played very nicely. The ball swung around nicely at the start, and it didn’t seem to trouble him. He has a promising career ahead of him, if all things go well. But very impressed from the first look,” said Boult, who claimed 5/38 in the first game on the limited-overs tour.

Boult, an IPL regular, said his side was outplayed by the Indian side. “It’s satisfying to re-familiarise ourselves with the conditions here. It was very hot this afternoon, but it’s disappointing to not come away with a win.

“It’s tough. It’s just what is expected in this part of the world. It’s about 7-8 degrees in NZ at the moment, so it’s a bit of a shock to the system to come here; 9.30 start and to play throughout the heat was a challenge. But we were outplayed by a quality Indian side.”

NZ SWING NEGATED

Boult credited Rahul (68) and Prithvi for setting up a strong platform. “They negated it very nicely, played a few shots. A lot of the credit goes to their openers for getting the platform for the rest. They put a very challenging total of the board,” said Boult.

The Indian Board President’s XI scored 295/9 and bowled out the Kiwis for 265.

The Kiwi pacers peppered the Indian batsmen with short balls, but didn’t get a lot of success. On the strategy, the left-arm pacer said, “Good opportunities to try different tactics in terms of a bowling plan. To come here and try bowl good line and length against some of the best players in the world is probably not the best recipe in getting them out.”

Investing in Dhawal Kulkarni and Aavesh Khan is a poor poor strategy, neither of them has anything special.

Some insights that go beyond the basic scorecard if you want them, from a live blog yesterday -
Board President's XI vs New Zealand, Full cricket score: NZ lose to BP XI by 30 runs | india-vs-new-zealand-2017 | Hindustan Times

11:41 hrs IST: And there goes Prithvi as well. Williamson decides to bring on spinners from both ends and it’s Mitchell Santner who has joined Sodhi from the other end. He lures Prithvi to charge down the ground with the flight but the youngster mistimes it and only holes one to long-off, where Nicholls takes yet another comfortable catch. Skipper Shreyas Iyer walks out in the middle now. Board President’s XI reach 151/2 at the end of the 26th over.

11:35 hrs IST: Gone! Finally, a breakthrough for the Black Caps. Rahul tries to sweep one off Sodhi but gets a top-edge to the short fine-leg fielder. Substitute Henry Nicholls takes the catch as Rahul walks back after scoring 68 off 75 deliveries. Karun Nair joins Prithvi Shaw in the middle. Board President’s XI are 147/1 after 25.1 overs.

11:27 hrs IST: Ish Sodhi has now joined Adam Milne from the other end. Board President’s XI are 135/0 at the end of 23 overs. Prithvi is still on 54 while Rahul has reached 65. Both Sodhi and Santner have comfortably beaten the openers this morning but the seamers haven’t been that impressive.

17:28 hrs IST: Unadkat sends back Mitch Santner and it only makes matters worse for the Kiwis. Grandhomme had taken charge at the other end and with a six and a four had given his side a bit of a hope but with his partner playing one on to his stumps, it’ll be interesting to see how he reacts with his side still 62 runs away from victory. New Zealand reach 234/8 at the end of the 44th over.

17:10 hrs IST: New Zealand’s losing the plot in the exact same manner as India had. Three wickets in two consecutive overs, including two by Shahbaz Nadeem in the 41st. The slide started with the settled Tom Lathan holing one to Avesh Khan in deep square-leg before Nadeem cleaning up Adam Milne (2) and Tim Southee (0) in the space of three deliveries. Mitch Santner and Colin de Grandhomme have a lot to do with their side still 91 runs away from victory. At the end of the 41st over, New Zealand are reeling at 205/7.

17:00 hrs IST: Latham gets a lifeline as Prithvi Shaw fails to hold on to a tough chance at deep fine leg off Avesh Khan. The left-hander makes most of it by cracking the final ball off Karn Sharma’s next over through cover to bring up his half-century. New Zealand need to accelerate as they need another 106 runs to win off 72 balls. New Zealand are 196/4 after 38 overs.

16:43 hrs IST: Taylor (34) gifts his wicket away. New Zealand were cruising and there was no need to poke the rising ball and then pull back from his intended shot. A thin edge and Pant won’t drop these behind the stumps. Avesh Khan gets his first wicket and the Kiwis are at 180/4 after 35.1 overs. Santner joins Latham (47) in the middle now.

16:29 hrs IST: Tom Latham has been responding well to his new batting position. The selectors and the coach had stated that they wanted the southpaw to come lower down the order and add stability in the department. He’s raced to 41 off 38 deliveries as New Zealand are 166/3 at the end of the 32nd over. The Kiwis require another 130 runs in 108 deliveries. Taylor’s so far been sluggish, batting on 28 off 44 deliveries.

16:14 hrs IST: New Zealand reach 150 at the end of the 29th over. Latham looks in good nick as he sweeps well down the leg side. Both batsmen are waiting for bad balls to be punished while picking up the singles and twos. New Zealand need 146 in 126 deliveries with 7 wickets in hand.

Nice work, Hindustan Times. Always good to get those unfiltered reports, unlike our other option -

Good for our boys to get used to the conditions and have some time in the middle. I'm sure we will be lot more competitive than the Aussies. I think we play the spin way better than the Aussies. Kane and Taylor are fantastic players of spin not to discount Tom Latham. We should be competitive I guess. Doesn't matter what the results are just looking forward to watching Black Caps, it seems like it's been a long off season for Black Caps.

Yeah it's been a long time. Looking forward to the upcoming test cricket season, starting 1 December and finishing 14 December, too. What a summer of cricket that will be.

I hear Tom Latham was dropped in the 40s/50s as well, which just adds to the Ross-Taylor-is-he-going-to-be-terrible-suddenly-oh-no-look-he-just-scored-a-century and WFGL Milne.

NZ used 11 bowlers, wtf

Pant's been very, very disappointing so far in his LA career. Barely any runs in the bunch of A games and BPXI games he's been playing.

NZ were quite decent in the ODI series this time last year, winning a couple of games and taking it to the decider (though they were flogged in that match). Hope we get a good series again.

Limited overs cricket in India is undeniably the new Everest of the New Zealand game. You'd expect it to bring out the be$t in us. :p
