I see Andrew Hazeldine is described as "left arm fast" (as opposed to fast medium or medium fast like most NZers) in his Cricinfo profile. Has anyone seen him bowl? How quick is he?

Not sure, but he's got a harrowing backstory.

Looks like Otago is very weak batting wise, only contracting four specialist batsmen, with G Phillips contacted centrally.

That leaves it with players like Rippon and Chu needing to take on a fair bit of responsibility, having to bat at 6 or 7 in all formats. Will also put some pressure on Jacob Cumming in the shorter formats.
Perhaps it leaves a chance for someone like Tasman-Jones, Llew Johnson, or Beckham Wheeler-Greenall if they score runs in club/Otago A etc

I guess Milne is in to provide the experienced but injury prone proxy for Bennett. I still find it hard to believe there aren't better seam bowlers around in Wellington club cricket than Michael Sneddon or Iain McPeake. And van Beek needs to rediscover his form from a couple of years back, else it's going to be a long, tedious Plunket Shield season.
There are no other reasonable bowlers, that is very true. I can't even think off the head one fast bowler probably worthy of playing for firebirds. James Hartshorn is a reasonable bowler. There was one from Taita, Pat Smith, a left arm medium pace but he's fallen away of late.

Otago still have 2 more spots to fill.

Plus, they apparently have access to the entire pool of CD Hawke Cup teams anyway, if last year is a precedent.

That's pretty sad. van Beek and Sneddon aren't local products either. Might be time to look into some other options (like they have with Milne). Should look at JJ Smit or Ruben Trumpelmann from Namibia to have a season or two here like Christi Viljoen did down in Otago. (to push my random Namibia milkfloat)

I've fielded at slip to him and spent all of that time hoping the batsmen wouldn't edge it to me. He's sharp, not outrageously quick by First Class standards but no slouch. Short, whippy arm action, runs in at a hundred miles an hour.

Jj Smit is a ****ing gun cricketer, would love to see him get some FC Gametime over in NZ.

A very different side for Otago, this. Will be interesting to see how it goes. Broom, Kitchen, Renwick retired; Kelly to Wellington. GP, Hazeldine, Foxcroft in.

The two players to be contracted would be, Wheeler-Greenall and McKenzie?

I don't mind it from Otago. Rutherford is still a very solid domestic player as is Duffy (who might be more yet) and they've managed to bring together a group of players who are only getting better. They could win the whole comp if they've timed it right with their group.

Never been ND's strong point but that's not a whole lot of batting, given Katene Clarke yet to find feet at FC level, Popli up and down and Seifert might sometimes still be away for NZ (though out of favour for now, which makes sense). A lot resting on Raval, Carter and Cooper.

Also want a big season from Fisher - NZ really need him, Sears and O'Rourke to come through and fill the generational fast bowler gap.
O rourke? Apologies but I genuinely know nothing about this guy. He's fast? I assume you're including his name alongside the likes of sears and fisher because he has some heat.

I wouldn't put him in the same league as Sears or Fisher. Maybe he could develop that way though, but I'd expect ~140 to be his peak.

Yeah O’Rourke looks sharp for a 20 year old but not remarkably so. more likely to be in the Tickner-Gillespie pace category than the Ferguson-Milne category.
