He's just so loose. Needs to get his **** together. Has had plenty of chances. Why do all the upcoming FC prospects look like Markram and Pope and none like Ponting?

to be fair, ponting took a while to get his **** together too

he'd literally just panned one in the air two metres to the left. but sure aiden, go ahead for another booming bottom-handed cover drive when you're nowhere near the pitch of the ball. great idea.
...and the couple boundaries he squirted through the region before, can't have been oblivious to the risk posed there and thereabouts. Pant aside it's been amateur hour batting today.

I mean ponting wasn't great for a while right? Wasn't around when he debutted but he made a few runs against sri lanka and got ****ed over by pak at home in gilly's debut series and by india in india, think it just takes time for these young guys. Steve waugh was a horrid no rounder for ages aswell.

Did he? Reckon he looked the business from very early on. It was mostly just off field stuff he had to sort out.
he debuted in 1995, didn't score his first century until 97 (having come very close on debut), but didn't really "hack it" at test level consistently until 99

Yeah but these guys have looked flat out terrible. Punter was edgy too but there's just no batting prodigies coming through right now.
Nissanka from SL has been great so far, green and gill are still young and have shown promise, not pope/makram areas for either yet.

But Ponting scored century against Pollock and Donald in 1997.

yeah the step up from FC level as a youngster when you haven't really completely got your head around batsmanship as an art and are mostly going off of raw talent to test level when you really do need that craft, that deeper understanding of the game, to survive is a huge one and it's vanishingly rare that it's a completely smooth one. michael clarke exploded early but then fell away hard in 2005-6 and got dropped, for example.

another current example is, of course, one c. green. clearly talented, but doesn't fully understand his own game yet and hasn't gotten to grips with batting as an art and lacks confidence in his own game as opposed to just the boundary hitting fun that it is at shield level for him. the step up right now is enormous, as difficult as it's ever been to deal with.
