yeah the league i play in is level 11 but thats from Prem down, its 7 if you start from the conference (but thats our first team, im too unfit to play for them now)

So with a bit of training I could probably be have a crack in step 7 or 8?

It's to do with the fact that the van just stands by the 6 yard box and waits for it to come to him, while Lampard has to run around the pitch more, playing in midfield and having to deliver passes and making lots of assists as well as scoring.

If only it were that simple....otherwise any tom, **** and harry could do that.

So Lampard a much more useful player because he not only scores goals but also helps the team in the mid field. With all his work in the mid field, he still manages to create chances which Marc was referring to.

I'd prefer both in my team. Lampard is brilliant and is the reincarnation of Bobby Charlton but we all know how people like to pick holes in "Manure" so lets ignore that 90% of strikers score inside the area. Ruud is in fact like most others.

My mate at uni played in one of the devon leagues and he was absolute toilet. I was better than him. If you took all uni-teams that would a few leagues to the system and i'd say they would slot in around the ryman league.

Yes, because there isn't enough space inside a penalty area (or there shouldn't be if the defending's half-decent) for a striker to get up to full pace. What matters in the area is acceleration and alertness, not pace. That's one of the reasons why Henry is so dangerous - there's loads of strikers just as quick as him over 100m or so, but few can match him over 10m, meaning he has the advantage where it counts.

Hell yes. Since when has diving and scoring penalties been enough qualities to get you into the England team? We're not that short of players that we need to pick a specialist penalty-taker - I know Euro 2004 was bad, but.......

tbh i don't think Erikkson wanted Johnson to succeed, he kept playing him wide right where he's obviously not going to be much good.

FWIW there are far worse players to have played for England, Ricketts, Scales, Wilcox, Dublin to name but a few

The worst player I've seen play for England in my twenty-odd years following footy is Geoff Thomas. Like Carlton "Hit Les, Demand it" Palmer without the skill or physical presence.

A Graham Failure pick, obviously.

EDIT: Alan Thompson & Steve Froggett (sp?) were both pretty average too. Both selected in our never-ending search for a midfielder who's left-footed & not poo. Both scored high on the former but low on the latter.

Not really, otherwise he'd be offside. It's called "being in the right place at the right time" - van Nistelrooy's anticipation is incredible, he's also scored a fair few goals starting outside the area, dribbling into it, and scoring (Fulham 2003 comes to mind).

"A fair few" might be stretching it a little - fair enough that Fulham goal was fantastic, but I've probably seen 90% of the goals he's scored since then and I can't remember any others of that ilk. Those that did consist of him running into the box and scoring were probably one-on-ones, and they're a different type of goal completely.

Great goalscorer, but hardly a scorer of great goals a la Henry (or Lampard, for that matter).

Fair enough, to be fair that Fulham goal was by far and away his best - but there have been others where he's dribbled into the penalty area to score - of course not like the Fulham one though.
