Woke up, looked at scoreboard , thought surely I’m still mid dream

but no it’s reality and thank the lord for Harry Brook, Pope and potentially Stokesy if he can convert his start

Thank the lord for NZ hands being made out of butter more like.

Brook dropped on 18,41,70 and 112 all should have been taken!

Stokes should have departed not long before the close too. 5 very costly drops, they also put down Duckett but he didn't damage the score too much. Plenty of near misses throughout the innings too.

We're in a great position though thanks to their mistakes. With 3 number 8s to come it's a class position to be in, hope we can get through a difficult first session tomorrow unscathed.

Further positives Brook second fastest to 2000 runs for an Englishmen with 36 innings to Sutcliffe 33. Joint 8th fastest all time.

He's currently averaging 93 away only Bradman with his 102 average higher! Even if he gets out next delivery he'd still be second to the Don.

Well we rode our luck massively.

But considering Root shouldn't have been made to come out and bat as he fell in the last over before lunch. Then that's what I call karma.

Terrible fielding effort by the Kiwis though, England been poor in recent series so we've passed the crap over to you.
I was brushing my teeth at the time so wasn’t watching. But the rule isn't that if the wicket falls in the last over before lunch then the session ends. It's only if the time for lunch has passed.

So using the times we play Tests here. If Bethell got out at 12.59 then they were right to bring Root out. If it had gone 13.00 then they go to lunch

Probably explains it then. Thought it was just if a wicket fell due to the changeover!

May well have fell moments before the hand ticked round to 00:00 our time.

As Root was coming out at midnight UK time and dismissed at 12:02 our time!

This is the part of the law I can find on it. I may well be dense interpreting it, but it reads like Root shouldn't have come out.

12.5 Completion of an over

Other than at the end of the match,

12.5.1 if the agreed time for an interval is reached during an over, the over shall be completed before the interval is taken, except as provided for in 12.5.2.

12.5.2 when less than 3 minutes remains before the time agreed for the next interval, the interval shall be taken immediately if

either a batter is dismissed or retires

or the players have occasion to leave the field

whether this occurs during an over or at the end of an over. Except at the end of an innings, if an over is thus interrupted it shall be completed on the resumption of play.

Was impressed by Orourkes pace, consistantly 145kmh plus, lot of edges that flew for four.

Still feel NZ can bowl England out cheaply. Even if England get a lead the pitch is so good for batting

Nz gunna need at least a 300 run lead for England to chase. NZ is gunna need a big Hundred from Williamson, hopefully he can be lucky and score 100 number 33 2mrw or Sunday and set this game up.

He shouldn't have had to come out before lunch mind.

Not seen any explanation as to why with a wicket falling in the final over before lunch did they not go off the field.
I’ve never seen a valid explanation for why batsmen aren’t made to come and play out the over tbh

Robinson is a better FC bat than Bethell anyway, he should absolutely go into the team.

In fact, would it be ridiculous to predict that Bethell never plays another Test for England?
He’s 21 and the set-up clearly like him, yes I think it’s ridiculous at this juncture to say he’ll never play another Test

How often in the history of test cricket would a batsman have been given 4 lives? Would be interesting to know what the record is.

I’m actually pretty sure he made a score against the West Indies, 170 odd maybe not out where he was dropped 4-5 times
