James Coles eh? Not that cricinfo know his DOB. Apparently he played lots of youth cricket in Oxfordshire; is that where Pickup has been involved, or is he based in the West Country?
Maybe should have replied to this slightly earlier in the day, but this lad is 100% an Oxfordshire product. First saw him as an eight-year-old playing three years up in a district squad, and he stood out even then. I had him in my County squads for two years, including the “invincibles” year - which doesn’t come around often for a minor county - and he managed to score three centuries in a week at one point (two were at school, but one was 132 in a County game...) He’s continued to score shed loads of runs at every level he’s played at, regularly featuring in the Home Counties Prem (top level of club cricket in Ox/Bucks/Berks), made a ton on men’s debut for the full Oxfordshire side this summer, and by all accounts was a class part at Bunbury.

Of course the step from MC cricket and club cricket into the pro game is a huge one, and you can never guarantee that success at one level will translate into the same success at the next, but he’s got everything on his side at the moment, and still got his head very much screwed on. The sky’s the limit...
